clunking noise (metal)

I have a 2004 2WD drive 4 runner, when I change my gears from drive to reverse or vice versa, I hear a light metal clinking noise from the under carriage.
I dont know where that noise is coming from any ideas.

First thing on my list to check would be the u-joints in the drive shaft.

Get a grease gun and lube the drive (prop) shaft.

2wd drive shafts do not have any zerk fittings to lubricate.

what should I check for, also since the 2WD don't have a zerk where should I apply the grease with the gun, any specific point

If the either of the u-joints in the drive shaft have started to fail, and is causing the noise, then the only way to fix it is to replace the bad u-joint.
