Clutch Fan??

96 4Runner 300k 4x4 auto

I'm heading to AZ and NM next month. I'm having a noise under the hood. I was sure it was the power steering pump. NOT

Background is that I had the noise last fall.

Since then, I have had the following changes under the hood.

New Motor
New power steering pump
New alternator
New belts

I had thought it might be a torque converter, but I serviced the transmission (rebuilt 2 years ago) and there was nothing on the screen.

If it's not the clutch fan, not sure. Where to go next.

Edit: At 300k it's probably not a bad idea to replace the fan clutch any way but...

Are you experiencing any other symptoms?
When does the noise occur?
Does the noise come and go or is it constant?
Any codes?
 
Noise is constant and goes up with increased tons. At 2k I can't hear it over the engine noise. Not sure why you can't see the video, it works when I click on it.

You labeled video private. Sign in link does'nt work.
You test fan clutch? yes/no
Take daily newspaper roll it up inch or two diameter
start engine take newspaper and see if you can stop fan from turning.
Checkout Toyota Tim how to vid. If you can stop fan, clutch good.
Who installed accessory belts? maybe too tight bearing gone bad.
Remove belts one at a time, start engine see what happens.
 
Well, I think I fixed the video part.

I will try the newspaper tomorrow, I had read that in another post but it didn't say if you can stop the fan it's good. Plus I wasn't sure how safe that would be.

All belts were replaced when the new motor was installed..

I will give it a shot tomorrow if it doesn't storm too bad.

Still, removing the belts one at a time will tell you which belt SYSTEM it is associated with. I'd say now the lead suspects are your idlers, and the fan bracket pulley, which are the only moving things you haven't changed. I'm leaving out the A/C compressor, because that would associate with use of A/C.

I doubt it's the fan clutch. They make a jet engine noise when they fail, and it's pretty obvious what it is, or they make no noise at all.
 
Well, I put another fan on tonight and the noise wasn't as loud, but not gone.

So, I'm going to also going to replace the fan bearing bracket. Idler bearing, water pump and tensioner were replaced when the new motor was installed.

Should I do anything else while I have this apart??

That sounds like the timing idler. You also have an A/C idler, that can make a noise whether or not A/C is engaged.

This is why you want to do the one belt at a time thing, so you don't replace the whole engine before finding your noise.
 
Planning on doing the belt test before getting additional parts.

im not sure if I do or not, I still can't get the video. I have a new (junkyard) engine with a ton of new parts that runs perfectly, except when it reaches operating temperature it starts ticking like crazy. I can't seem to pinpoint the noise. is this a similar noise you're getting?
