Clutch master cylinders..should I be going through this many?

SOLVED STUPID Clutch bushing..explains why I keep having to pay $500 for clutch work

I have a 1998 4Runner and I just finished putting in all my service history for the past 3 years. One thing I noticed is how often I've replaced my clutch.

Same symptoms each time..clutch would start to 'suck' downward and eventually just lay flat and i would have to grab under it with my foot to pull it up so i could shift. I'm not burning the damn clutch out; I know how to use it..it just seems to wear out alot. Here's what I've had done:'

2/18/2009 mileage 169240 Clutch master cylinder
3/15/2010 mileage 196148 Clutch master cylinder
8/5/2011 mileage 230883 Clutch master cylinder
10/10/2011 mileage 238085 Oil Change/Clutch

The last one (10/10) was due to the clutch master cylinder being installed 'backwards' according to the dealer; it was just a $75 fix whereas the other ones were $400.

Just a couple weeks ago, my clutch starting making a clicking noise and the dealer told me:

"Noise in clutch; input shaft bearings starting to wear & cause noise; vehicle will run long time w/ this noise; would have to rebuild transmission to fix"

Is this normal to have this many clutch issues?

Was the slave cylinder ever replaced along with the clutch master? You shouldn't be going through them like that. Sounds more like either is was never bled properly or it's getting air somewhere.

according to the notes, "Clutch master cylinder, bleed clutch, slave cylinder, brake fluid" each time.

i will also point out its been done by 3 different mechanics; since i travel alot, i'm often out of town when the clutch goes out and have to go with whoever was close by.

oh now i see!!! its a stupid plastic part that keeps breaking.

that's my problem in a nutshell. looks like this is going to keep screwing me over unless you do this mod. thanks for the plastic bushing toyota!

i feel really stupid and angry that a 20 cent part is causing me to have major clutch surgery every couple of years.

it seems newer 4runners (01 and up) don't have this issue..its those of us with 1998 5 speeds.

i'm doing this mod very soon. mine is already starting to squeak again and i was wondering why the squeaking seemed to precede the whole thing failing.

Similar Issue Recently

Our, new to us, 2000 had the same symptoms and we repaired the standard clutch pedal bushing. Unfortunately once we put everything together we still had the pedal sink to the floor. Then we had to rebuild the clutch master and our problem was solved. Hopefully your clutch pedal is the issue but you may need more than just that. Good luck.

That's because '01 and newer 4Runner's are only available with an automatic transmission.

Be glad you have the 5-speed manual, it makes these 4Runners much more fun to drive, IMO.

My pedal isn't coming all the way back up. So I can fix this without replacing the Master Cylinder?

I am having a problem where I’ll put the clutch in when I’m in first and it won’t come all the way back up sometimes staying all the way down on the floor and I’ll have to pull it back out with my foot and the problem lessens as I enter higher gears. Some times when I’m at a stop sign I’ll up the clutch in as I shift into first before I get going again and my foot will be on the floor (all the way pushed in) and ill stall out. Some one please help. Is it my slave/clutch master? My clutch peddle assembly? I’ve seen people cussing out the cheep $20 plastic part/bushing but idk? I don’t think it’s the clutch itself cause I only have 70k on my 98 and I’m pretty good at driving clutch and I don’t have any slippage problem. Idk what it is. Thanks

What are you replacing the clutch master cylinder with? Oem /oem mfg or aftermarket parts?
