Clutch Slippage

My Clutch is starting to slip sometimes, super noticable in 4th gear, when I step on it to the floor, I instantly redline when i am doing 40 MPH in 4th. It is a 96 Runner 3.4 manual with 136K. I went to a shop ad told them about it but they said 998 dollars. I think they are just trying to empty my wallet. Anyone else with any issues?

clutch is going out hope it dont leave you out in the middle of nowhere ... clutch are not that hard of a job few freinds a tranny jack 6-8 hours later good as new
