i am having an issue and it is costing me a lot of time and headaches because i can't figure it out.
-I noticed that my clutch was starting to slip, so I bought a new one online from JC whitney (don't shop there).
-They sent me the clutch, I had a hard time separating the engine from the bellhousing, but after about 6 hours finally got it.
-the old pilot bearing was smashed, (my fault), and I replaced the old clutch.
-put everything back together.
-started truck, can't get it even close to being in gear.
-pulled tranny and engine back apart, and pulled off new clutch.
-I took it to a mechanic to check,and then to the parts store to make sure it was the right one.
-was definitely NOT the right one.
-bought the correct clutch plate and pressure plate and throwout bearing and reinstalled new new clutch.
-bled the lines and now I am having the same problem: I can't get it into gear when it is running, and if I start it in gear, the clutch is not even engaged, the truck doesn't move, and I can't get it out of gear.

What the heck!? is my transmission broken?
I rebuilt the slave cylinder, should i rebuild/replace the master cylinder?
I am at a total loss here.
Im pretty sure that i installed the pressure plate and clutch plate correctly and I know the the new throwout bearing is in right, so why won't it work?
Im sure that there is no air in the lines... maybe the fork is cracked, but I don't think so...

any ideas???

after thinking about it some more, I remembered that I hadn't used a torque wrench on the pressure plate bolts... maybe I tightened them too much so that the clutch simply can't disengage?

Maybe the master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch is bad.

Figured it out: First, I had tightened the bolts on the pressure plate unevenly, and second, the spring on the clutch fork was backwards.
I have another question: This is my first 4runner, I love it.
I am on a road trip and (its a 4banger) im carrying about 400lbs besides the curbweight of the truck. When I go up hills, the fastest I can go, even in 4th gear is 60... is that bad or normal for a 4 cyl.? I put an aftermarket air intake on it, but it didn't seem to really help any. Any ideas on how i can get some more HP without rebuilding the engine?
