I guess when I read that I pictured 90's 5.0 Mustangs haha.. Maybe I would need one if I had a supercharger... Or maybe I'm just old.

They detect radar, if they go off... You've been caught. You're just not going fast enough for the cop to care at that particular moment.
There's all kinds of tech info about beam widths and case law required for their use... Most [emoji1345] use LIDAR now, for which there is no detector as they are point of aim, point of impact.

I don't really ever worry about speeding in my '98 just cuz 65 is perfectly fine for me...maybe I'm becoming and old man.
That being said, many people who install CB's put them here. There are a couple other locations where it can fit and work out. The reason I picked the ashtray was because even when I was a smoker I ashed out the window and never used the ashtray anyways. Ran the power to the CB from the light that used to be in the ashtray and it was basically plug and play.

That's not true of RADAR at all. RADAR blasts out into space like a flashlight. If it's pointed toward you a detector will pick it up for miles before you're close enough to be clocked.
LIDAR is more difficult for sure, but I often get LASER hits when they shoot the car in front of me. LIDAR can only be used when the cop is stationary, and he has to have a clear line of sight, and hit something reflective on the front of the vehicle. If you're paying attention and see him, you can get on the brakes faster than he can clock you.
I've been running Passports for years, and the only time I've ever gotten a speeding ticket was when I either ignored the detector. Last week was an exception and I got an 88 in a 65, but it was a speed trap using aircraft.

I only have one in the 4Runner because I upgraded the one in the car, but it has saved me once or twice.
The interstates here in FL used to be almost free of speed traps, but over the last couple of years is guess they've realized it's a great way to pull more money out of the pockets of tourists, and it's pretty bad.

You're right about Radar, broadcasting a wide beam, but not into space. The handheld radar we're talking about runs on 12v...
There's several more steps to using Radar. You can't just drive around or park with your finger on the trigger and when it screams you cite the first car you see.
LIDAR's beam width at 1000' is approx 6' (about the width of a passenger vehicle and half the width of most highway lanes)

the Chicanos in AZ hang a CD or DVD to reflect the LIDAR. I think they are just upgrading to Blueray for better stealth.

Like I said, I've been running them for years. With RADAR I know you're there before you can even see me, unless you're using instant-on and I'm the only car on the road.
Even 12V RADAR can be seen for miles by a detector.
Oh, and full disclosure, I was an air traffic control RADAR tech in the Marine Corps. I could go into detail about RF wave propagation, reception, and filtering that would bore you to tears. Trust me on this, I understand how it works. :wink2:

Radar is used for confirmation of the visual estimation of speed +/- 5mph. Which is why I said you've already been caught.
Lidar is point of aim point of impact. It is also used for confirmation of the Officers visual speed estimation. No one is estimating speed at 1000' so the beam is even smaller.
And finally, people buy things that work... Like our 4Runners. If detectors worked as good as you believe. Why isn't the manufacturing of radar detectors a billion dollar industry?

Things must be different where you're at, because in most states on the East coast the troopers are blaring constant kA band.
You're not catching people with quality detectors, because they know you're there before you see them, and slow down. There are literally thousands of videos on YouTube that demonstrate what I'm talking about.
As for the industry, it IS a billion dollar industry. Valentine and Escort probably top that without even adding in all the lower end stuff.
You should buy one, and drive around with it for a while and you'll see what I'm talking about. A cop using RADAR is at a serious disadvantage against someone with a quality detector.

The idea is they go off when the cop is shooting somebody in front of you. I still believe in mine, and I live in the 75-79 zone. One ticket since 1979, and I didn't have the detector that night.

I could also see the advantage of knowing a cop is downrange and deciding not to speed up trying to overtake someone at that point.
