Code p0340 camshaft position signal NEED HELP

I have a 1999 Limited 3.4L V6 4WD

I just got my car back from the body shop after a bad wreck. When I got it Wednesday they told me the check engine light came on during the test drive on Monday(today is Thursday). Autozone diagnosed the light. I am not hearing any difference in the sound of the engine and am not losing any noticeable power. Engine seems to be running normal. I disconnected the battery for a few minutes and let everything reset and when I put it back on and fired up the car it was good for a bit and after a few engine revs in neutral the light came back on.

Probable Causes (are listed as):
1. Cam Sensor defective
2. Check connector and wiring to sensor
3. Engine mechanical condition-time belt/chain out of time.

All new belts put on in December 06.

Diagnostic continues stating: PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for camshaft position sensor "A" (Bank 1 or single sensor) (bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)

Can anyone help me fix this on my own? Preferably without spending the +$200 on a new cam sensor??

Was the damage to the front of the vehicle? If so, it is possible that they had to remove/replace the timing cover which has a connector for the cam sensors on it. Look down on the surface of the timing cover and see if they forgot to connect it back up. It should be about 1/2 way down on the left if facing the motor.

damage was to the front left bumper. Front left tire was destroyed. Engine was not damaged as far as I understand. But I will check out that area of the engine tomorrow once the sun comes up. I hope thats the issue. How do i reattach the timing cover if that is the issue? Just pop it back on?

The timing cover is held on by six bolts. The connector for the sensor is a female-male plastic plug that is anchored to the surface of the timing cover - you don;t need to remove it to see the connector. It is possible that they disconnected or pulled it apart on accident. Good luck and post up what you find!

I cant find any disconnected plugs. I have been looking online to try to find a picture of a camshaft sensor plug but I haven't been too lucky with that so far. If you can help me find a picture I'd be grateful. If you need a picture of what I am seeing I can get that for you as well.

All i could see were the belts on the front of the engine behind the grille. No plugs nearby them, except the airbag sensor plug on the left.

If you are looking at the front of your motor, the timing cover is the black plastic piece that says "3.4L 2400 cam blah blah" on it . The radiator hose is going into the top middle of it. Look on the surface of the cover, behind the A/C and power steering belts, and you should see a little connector mounted there.

I found the sensor. It was connected but not attached to the front of the timing cover. I reattached it to the little clip that holds it on the timing cover. It came apart very easily while I was trying to reattach it. So I put the male and female parts of the plugs back together and then reattached it. I think it will very simply just come apart based on how easily it did just because i touched it. Check Engine light is still on but I believe I have to have that canceled out or disconnect the battery to clear the memory... is that correct? I can try to get the people at Autozone to cancel the light and see if it comes back on. I hope that will work. I'll let ya know if there are still issues, although at that point I think I will have to have a mechanic look at it, and figure out whats going on. Thanks, Greedy

i bet it is a wire that got riped apart or cut during the accident or while they were doing body work.

Well I reattached that sensor yesterday. Went driving for 10 minutes today light was still on. Went to a movie and when i left the movie the light was no longer on... I am hoping it stays off. Thanks for the help greedy

I have a similar issue, my wife and I went out to dinner the night before and returned home. We parked our 06' 4Runner and called it a night.... The next day we were
going to run some errands and when we went to start the truck, it would click ( not fast ) and would not start... I could see the belts turning as it tried to start but no dice. Battery is good etc. I got a code of P0345 and was wondering if I changed the cam position sensors if this could be solved... I also noticed that since the truck has sat, it seems the battery is dying.....

My wife needs to get to work on Monday... Its an 06' 4Runner Ltd 4WD with 128K... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.....

This was a problem on mine when I had the TB done. It's at the front on the passenger side if I recall correctly...
