Code points to a solenoid.. but that ain't it..

When i woke up this AM I was looking at a possible new transmission. I was relieved to find out that the Transmission was fine(as i guessed) Now i was hoping that paying $400 for a Transmission Solenoid would be the end of the day.

The Solenoid checks out and so does the wiring.. Uh oh... What could it be?

I am now being told my ECU is causing the code and is the reason my transmission won't give me 1st/3rd gear. 2nd and 4th work just fine.

"Ok, i say order me up a ECU".... Slight pause.... then I'm told "we don't have them anymore"

How was YOUR day?

Have you tried unplugging the ECU and blowing in it like one those old Nintendo cartridges haha? Yeah that sucks, can you get a salvaged one from ebay?

You might be able to get it repaired if a resistor or some basic component burned up. If it's a chip or re-programming involved it's probably not worth it. There are repair shops that can solder stuff like that under a microscope, check around town.

Thanks Guys....
I just wish i could get a new one from the dealer. but like the post says

"they don't mak em" anymore. incidentally the CEL code P0758.il try some of the local yards and see if anyone has one..

What gets me is i am the original owner.. this is a gently used truck what do you multiple owner hi mileage guys have to deal with?

New cat from toyo last week -exhaust last summer and i ain't done yet

You try the speed sensor for the transmission?

Largest problem I've had to deal with so far is a front pump seal leak requiring the transmission to come out. Replaced everything I could think of while it was out. Never had any sort of electrical problem yet other than tps very slowly going bad. And burnt out resistor on back of fuel gauge board I was able to solder.

How well do you trust your stealership? Your ecu could very well be a NLA part as they say.
You should find what the part number is for your ecu, and search it on your own just to make sure.

I had a buddy suggest that also. Looks like you lucked out!

The PN is 896661-3D321-84

This is actually the first time i am using this dealership.(other than replacing my Cat convert last week)My original dealership started getting crappy. All the "Techs" retired and were replaced by "whatever"

My local shops are not much less than the dealer so this is why i go there. I dont have the option to work at home(Condo complex)

I would get a used one from ebay. They are cheap for the auto, last I checked around 150$ and they rarely fail. The manual ecu is over $400 used

She's a 97... gently used too

When I was having transmission issues, I tried swapping in a different ECU that I got from the junk yard, unfortunately my tranny was physically messed up so the ECU swap didn't fix it.

I also have a 97 (4x4 auto) and I believe the ECU I swapped in was from a 98 (4x4 auto).

The donor ECU worked fine it just wasn't the source of the issue. I'm pretty sure I still have it laying around if you're interested in it. I can check tonight when I get home.

U mite want to try pulling the valve body, dissembling and cleaning a up/out and crap that's in there, reassembling and c if ur issue if fixed. Could just b something blocking/stopping the solenoid from preforming its job...

That's powerful good of you!!
I lucked out!! My tranny was clean. so naturally they went straight for the ECU.Since you were having Tranny issues also i am confident that the techs were heading in the right direction. I might try to have my old one repaired before i swap in one from elseware

Let me know what you might want for it... I will keep your offer handy.
Thanks!!

Was wondering if you found a solution, or which way you went. My 97 4runner Limited auto (100k miles) has been acting up. Sticks in 1st, revs all the way 3500-4000 rpm and will not shift, unless I let off the accelerator pedal rapidly, then it will shift, straight from 1st to 3rd, by passing 2nd. So basically, going up any kind of an incline or hill I’m stuck in first, winding out the engine. It’s throwing 2 codes, the P758 and P120. I don’t even know where to start. I degreased under the engine, pressure washed under there hoping it might have been oil on something but no change. Have you solved the issue with an ECU swap?

Hey there,
My issue turned out to be solenoid related. So Simple. I was hoping that that ECU wasn't the issue. I wasn't looking forward to dealing with all that mess. My first issue was finding a GOOD tech who still likes to work on older Vehicles and who won't complain.

i ended up replacing ALL of the solenoids and had a complete Transmission service.

My next issue is dealing with the Pumpkin. My Engine is still strong. My LBJ'S are next.

i like my 4runner.... and i plan to keep it as long as i can! sorry for not replying back sonner.

Best of luck!
