Yea , when fully assembled and installed the bushing and washer move freely up and down the shock rod inside the coil as sounds like loose change when driving

Is the nut tightening all the way down? It sounds like you dont have the spring comressed all the way when you're putting everyting together, is the bottom of the spring seated in the cup all of the way?

old man emu set up i drove the top nut down with an air wrench and still have a gap between the bottom of the top hat and the washer bushing set up, also not enough room for a bushing and washer on top, i'm thinking either that my spring compressors aren't doing the job and i'm not getting the coil compressed enough or the shock is simply to short, but i doubt the later as it was all bought as a kit and matched, i'm going to go and pay the $50 to have someone through it on one of the hydraulic set-ups and see if that's the issue, if not i have no idea what the heck is going on here,it's the strangest thing i've ever seen as this is not my first rodeo but for some reason everything just seems as if it just doesn't want to fit.....

here's what my top plat looked like when i removed it

and here's a drawing of my issue

note i broke 2 pairs of spring compressors with 1/2 inch threaded rod trying to compress these down enough to get everything to fit, i am fairly certain as well that i got them as tight as anyone else out there trying it with manually operated spring compressors....

also whats the draw backs of running without those spacers? from looking at it they are nothing more then bump stops of sort, or are they more like a spacer keeping everything tight and in line?

do you guys have any idea why the top plate would get that key hole shape ground in it from the shock rod?

Which spacers are your refering to? if its the bushing, then yes you do need them and that is why you are having the problem. that is also why the top plate has the keyhole in it. what is happening is the shock rod is moving up and down inside the top plate and rubbing on the hole which is causing the keyhole. You NEED to have both upper and lower bushings and washers installed otherwise you are gonna have major problems.

that's what i though but for some reason i can't seem get the washer and bushing under the top hat to sit flush with one and another..... they bottom bushing/spacer or whatever wants to move up and down all of the time sounding like loose change .....

:jaw drop: How long have you been running it like that?!? You need new strut mounts my friend! The only thing I can think of is that you arent compressing the spring enough, take it to a shop and have them do it for you, after you get new strut mounts. How bad are the threads on the strut now? They have to fubar'd at this point after using them as a file to make that "key whole".

About 2 weeks the threads are fine so what your saying is my upper shock mountvis messed up and i need to do some welding then...i think i'm going to order my billies tomorrow and use the press at work or something...

Lol i know but i had 30 mins to find ilone and put it back together and the other shops didn't stock em. Lol gotta do whatcha gotta do some times

Yeah I hear that, I'm actually surprised the dealership stocks these, I dont really think of it as a common fail item.
