Coil Spring Lifts and XREAS

I have searched and read hundreds of threads saying you can ONLY lift XREAS equipped 4Runners using spacer lifts. I have not been able to find out why...can someone answer this for me?

Also, does anyone use a 1" diff drop with their 3"/2" lifts. I use one on my 2007 Tacoma with the Revtek spacer kit and it has worked well for me and my CV's the past 16K.

Thanks for any help!

It can be done, the problem is that you are most likely referring to the Toytec lift, which uses OME sourced springs that are longer and firmer than stock. This setup will work, but the stock XREAS shock will not be an ideal setup with firmer springs.

I was thinking of getting the OME for awhile now. I don't see why having the XREAS would be better then just installing the OME lift kit. maybe someone here that has the OME can add some light to this.
I personally don't like using spacers

So it seems that everything I am reading is saying that most people agree that using say a 2" spacer and using a 2" lift coil would have the exact same effect on the XREAS shocks. So my question is still why does everyone say to only use spacer kits on XREAS when a taller coil would have the same effect?

That is the reason I am going to do the coil lift and not the spacers. If it messes up my XREAS then i will just remove it.. Which I don't think it will since everyone runner the spacers are not having any problems. I will be using the Toytec kit which I am thinking will be a better quality ride than doing the spacer lift which from what I under stand make the stock ride more harsh.

I believe the spacers were the first option, before longer springs were avail. Some of the suspension threads need to be updated.

That said, I dont think changing springs is an ideal setup. You are better off going with either a full OME setup or a spacer lift. Unless you are able to find out the rates of the springs, and if they are progressive enough to allow flex while off-roading, yet still provide good on on road feel.

I really don't see the differance here. The limiting facter on the flex of the suspention is not the springs. when you add a spacer that is preloading the springs you are limiting the amount of upward travel the spring would have allowed stock so in all you range of motion has been decreased ie less flex. While replacing the sprind will provide lift it will not limit the upward travel like the spacers will. Also you limiting factor for flex in the front and rear are the sway bars, shocks, and bump stops. To increase flex for rock crawling people install sway bar disconnects and longer shocks and different bump stops.

The difference is that an ome sourced coil is stiffer and not designed to work with the soft factory shock. The rebound of the spring will not be controlled well with the stock shock valving, causing unwanted kickback on hard bumps and while offroading.

I understand what you are saying. this kit I am looking at from toytec 3RUN-FRCC is not the OME springs and they are the toytec springs which are listed as stock ride. Also I know this is right off there site but they state "The kits below work with stock front and rear shocks, longer rear shocks will however improve flex off road." link to kits for 03-08 from toytec http://www.toyteclifts.com/03074runnercart.html#03074runnerliftkits.html and as for the stiffer spring have a harsher rebound you should get the same results with the preloads since its creating the lift by compressing the springs or am I wrong? Now I haven't dealt with any proload lifts so I am only stated what I have read here and else where on the net. Now if we are talking about topout spacers then this will not effect the travel of the suspention. Once I do my toytec lift I will let everyone know how it turned out. as for XREAS if it ends up killing it then new shocks will be ordered.

I've been saying that there is no reason that this can't work with those springs over in the off-road section. Exactly what I'm thinking of doing when I lift. Putting Daystar's in the front and the Toy Tec stock ride 2" coils in the rear.

If this is going to work can't you just put coils in front too instead of DS.

I will be replacing the springs in the front and rear with the toytec spring kit. I will let you know how it turns out. I should be doing this lift in about 2 or three months.

I'm no suspension expert but I asked this quite a long time ago to basically no , but I dont understand why it would not work. How high are the springs supposed to lift ? I personally would rather do that then spacers.

2-3 months , I need a test pilot sooner than that.

The thing I like about spacer lifts or something like your doing is that pulling the springs out or the spacers out and the truck is back to stock if you want to sell it or trade it in , since lifts decrease the value greatly.

I had that same idea when purchasing the full OME setup from Slee Offroad. For a little extra $ they will prebuild the front coilsprings/shocks and then it is just plug and play. When it comes time to sell, I can swap out the OME coil pack with the stock stuff in very little time. No need for a spring compressor and easier than messing with spacers.

I agree , I would have to cap off my Xreas though which should not be a big deal , since I would disconnect the shock to install spacers anyway. If I didn't have that to contend with I would just do shocks and coils.

What do you mean by prebuild ? Do they do it to the height you want and ride you prefer ?

He means they put the shock and coil together for you, otherwise they come as seperate pieces and you have to use a coil compressor to install the coil on the shock.

Oh I understand now. I wonder how the ride is ?? and the amount of lift it gives ?
