Coils for 2001 4Runner 4WD

Hello,

I'm interested in suggestions on replacement coil springs for a 2001 4Runner 4WD to improve the "stability" and "steadiness" of the ride (or at least return to the original ride condition). I would also like to maintain the original ride height.

Here are the specifics:

1. 2001 4Runner SR5 4WD with 65,000 miles of on-road driving only
2. Yes, very low miles (above) and vehicle is 9.5 years old
3. OEM shocks replaced with Bilstein Heavy Duty (HD) shocks. Bilsteins greatly improved "steadiness" in cornering. So, the 4Runner corners "flat"
4. Still has original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coil springs
5. Car is used in the NYC area (potholes and snow)

I've seen "OEM" / standard size springs from manufacturers such as Husky Springs, Raybestos, and Moog. These three also vary widely in price (but are all lower than Toyota OEM coil springs).

Any suggestions/insights on manufacturers and what else should be ordered with these springs would be welcome. Thanks for your help.

I at one point ordered the Moog coils and what I was told when I ordered them from Denver Spring and Suspension, Denver Spring & Suspension
is that even though they arent as tall, they are wrapped tighter and possibly are thicker coils so that your 4runner shouldnt sit lower at all.

in fact, it should sit a teeny bit higher because the coils dont compress as easily..

Many of us of course run the OME and no longer the OEM.

Old Man Emus in this case, offer a variety of spring rates. The 890 spring for the rears can be had pretty inexpensively and is a good overall spring for just a bit of lift and still maintain a comfortable ride.

Many many choices out there, Toytec, Sonoran Steel, and I got mine from TRDPARTS4U.com

Moog or Toyota OEM Coil Springs

Thanks for the comments about Moog and Old Man Enu coil springs.

I see you've commented that the Moog coil springs may be thicker than Toyota OEM coil springs.

1. Which would you say offers a "better" ride, that will eliminate side-to-side / "jerkiness" in the ride?

2. Which would "pair" / complementary to Bilstein shocks (BE5-2451-H0 and BE5-F332-H0)

3. Would you suggest variable or constate rate coil springs (with Bilstein shocks)?

4. Looking for any final comments on other brands Raybestos and Husky Springs.

I get my new Bilstein HD Shocks in tomorrow, so I will be installing those and new Toyota springs.

The 99 year came with two different coil options, one tall, and one short.

I originally had the short ones (which I believe are still taller than the 01) and I just got the tall ones.

I am expecting a much better ride out of them as well as increased ride height, I will pitch in to this thread when I can give you some good input as to how the vehicle performs afterwards.

Assessment: Coils & Sway Bar Bushings Need Replacement

Thanks Brian2sun, techno, champ306, hossmaster, and others for your suggestions.

Brought the 4Runner to a Toyota Dealer Service to have this checked (no diagnostic fee). Extremely experienced service manager took the time to provide direct analysis (on ground and on lift) covering all the points posted here.

1. Coils are definitely "tired" and rear is sagging slightly (noticeable when side-by-side to another 4Runner with new stock coils). Indicated by residual bounce, sagging rear, and ability to squeeze the rear coils by hand.

Will also replace a number of other bushings related to this replacement just in case.

2. Sway bar bushings are "worn" - there's a slight space where the bushing doesn't touch a portion of the sway bar allowing movement of the bar

3. Tie rods are fine

4. Ball joints are fine

5. Rack bushings are fine

6. New Bilstein shocks look fine - no leaks

Plan to purchase Toyota OEM coils (front and rear), sway bar bushings (front and rear), related other bushings, from ToyotaPartsZone.com... Approximately $400 + shipping. About 20% off list from this online vendor.

Original equipment (OEM) coils seems to be recommended on this and other threads for same height needs (no lift needed) + Bilstein HD shocks. Moog, Raybestos, and Husky Springs also make OEM replacement coils (about 50% the cost of Toyota OEM).
