cold mornings = toxic exhaust

whenever i start my 4runner after a particularly cold night, or where morning temps are 35 or below, i notice that the exhaust fumes seem unusually strong. i keep my runner in the attached garage of our house and the smell of the exhaust in the morning seems to permeate the garage and fill our kitchen with a strong malodor.


in addition to the bad odor, then engine seems quite loud as well, with some loud ticking. it only lasts for about 10 - 20 seconds, but is noticeable none-the-less. anyone else experience this?

It should run rich when starting in the cold temps. This will create a stronger exhaust smell. As far as being loud, the engine should also run at a higher than warm idle RPM to warm the engine up more quickly, but I am not sure about the loud ticking... Could be the metal in the exhaust expanding as it heats up.

Yeah mine does the same thing. I wouldn't worry about. Maybe try getting the 4Runner outside before you start it.

Whats is he supposed to push it out of the garage ?

Mine does all this as well , no worries. I also have an attatched garage , but I usually pull out and go after a short bit of running. Make sure you dont idle to long in the garage , exhaust is facing the door , and for gods sake OPEN the garage door .....j/k

My garage is fully insulated and heated although it stay relatively comfortable in there without heat,if it gets like below 20* we keep the heat on low all the time , usually 45-50* is the lowest setting. This enables me to start the truck and go without any warm ups.

I have a piece of 4" dia tubing when I need to run in the garage. I open the door about 6" and run the tube outside and around the corner from the opening. The other end of the tube goes on the tailpipe (all the way to the resonator). Mostly I try to keep the door open or idle it outside.

I do that with the Vette....no cats + no choke = long stanky warmup before it wants to drive normally. Do that in my attached garage and the basement gets smoked out pretty bad. So I just knock it into nuetral and give it a shove before firing up. The ease of which depends on the garage slope tho.....
