Have you figured it out....? I think it could be an embrionic headgasket leak or cracked cylinder head. Possibly cylier 3. How many miles on the motor? Somewhere beween 175k -220k? Could be that once the head gets warm the crack seals up and when it sits and cools the crsck gets bigger since it contracts and leaks abit of coolant in the cylinder. Gonto stsrt it up and it burns off that coolant for a couple seconds and goes away. Ive done many head gaskets and head that started out this way. It will eventually get worse and be obvious.

You stated that the fuel trims where -18. Was that on both engine banks? Just 1 or just 2?

And when you stated you changed wires is that just the 3 wires or wires and the coil boots?

The scan gauge reports "SF1" so I guess that means bank 1. I only changed the wires as I have not had any issues with my coils. Didn't think to change those 3 boots.

Have not figured it out, however I am losing no coolant at all. It's still at the very top of the radiator, just under where it spills into the overflow.

it sounds like a misfire CEL that I am dealing w/ now (and more common on our aging t4r-s)

Here is my progress so far:
1. new spark plugs and NGK wires few months ago (before the misfire) so I doubt they are bad
2. I checked 3 ignition coils and one were testing way above its tolerance level so I got a new denso one on amazon.
3. I've just done seafoam from the intake (probably a temporary fix) yesterday and no misfires today yet.
4. If it the misfires, I will probably swap out all six injectors. (all six as a precautionary measure)

Yes that's likely bank 1. I haven't had much time with a scan gauge. Mostly the snap on scanners and a few pc based.

Bank 1 is your passenger bank, which the coils are on. I'd check the coil boots and see if they are ok. It could be a failed boot or failing coil.

Well, no progress has been made. I had the injectors cleaned/flow matched/whatever else they do to them. He said one was flowing way higher than the other 5, so I was hopeful it would have a noticable affect on things. It didn't.

I'm pretty lost, to be honest. Going to do a compression check tomorrow and if it doesn't teach me anything (I really hope it doesn't...) I'll likely just drop it off at a mechanic.

Never even heard of it! lol No I have not.

Dry compression test seemed allllll good and dandy until the last cylinder- cylinder 6.


5- 185 // 6- 150

3- 175 // 4- 180

1- 190 // 2- 190

I wasn't thinking clearly after that last cylinder and just put everything together and returned the tester. In retrospect I probably (for sure) should have done a wet test.

I tested the coolant for exhaust gasses and it was negative. So maybe it's NOT a failing head gasket.

Going to run a wet compression check on that cylinder, and then go from there.

The wet check showed a large rise in compression for that cylinder, so I was advised to soak the cylinder in Marvel Mystery Oil overnight by a friend who has had good luck with this stuff in the past. I was skeptical of any additive I can buy at Wal-Mart, but I don't think he has ever been wrong...

Added 2 TBSP to the cylinder, let it sit for 2 hours. After 2 hours I turned the crank a full rotation by hand, and let it sit 2 more hours. Then I turned it another rotation by hand, added 2 more TBSP, and let it sit overnight.

This morning I turned it over with the key to force out as much of the oil as possible. Replaced my plugs, and let it run for awhile.

Checked compression.... 175!

Went for a drive to burn off everything in the cylinder and checked one more time... 175 again! So stoked.

So now I am at...

5- 185 // 6- 175

3- 175 // 4- 180

1- 190 // 2- 190
