Cold suspension

While I am hoping this won't matter when I rebuild the front suspension, I'm curious. On cold mornings I get all kinds of noise from my front suspension. Squeaks and grinds mostly. When I get under there I can't find a source. This only happens in the mornings below freezing. Any other time it is quiet as a mouse.

I think to an extent its normal. I don't get any grinding sounds, but I get lots of squeaking from the control arm and tie rod bushings. I think the wetness of snow and the cold temps. contribute to it. Unless other here say that the grinding is normal, I would spend some time trying to find the culprit of that. Doesn't seem to me that anything should be grinding up there.

Bump

I want to ask this again. I thought that maybe the cause was moisture freezing inside the wheel bearings. I replaced the bearings and seals yesterday so I know for a fact there was no moisture in there. The issue is still there. As soon as the temp goes above freezing, the problem stops.

CV joints maybe? It sounds like a grind as I am driving.

If it goes away as you drive, I'd suspect old grease in the CVs. Pop the boot and shove some more grease in there, see if it goes away.

Grinds might be the grease packed in the wheel bearing. You might consider switching over to synthetic Mobil 1 version(red stuff). It handles the cold temps much better then the factory spec standard grease.
Squeaks are usually bushings, either shot, need replacement, or needing to be greased. You might try lubing up the sway bar ones and see if it goes away. If not, probably the control arm bushings. Ours will squeak a bit, but only because they need to be regreased/lubed.

Footofgod, do you have manual hubs by chance? I got a grinding sound awhile back that I could have sworn was a CV or wheel bearing, but it ended up being one of the manual hubs not being fully unlocked. Just thought I'd throw out another thing you could check.
