Cold Tranny

I have a 98 5spd. So in the mornings when i leave for school I have to left the truck warm up before it'll go into any gear, but in the afternoons when is warmer it shifts like a dream what could my problem be? Plz help me.

What kind of fluid is in the transmission? And how old is it?

I bought it last Saturday and the guy i bought it from had a meticulous list of maintanace from the dealership and said he had all the fluids changed last oil change, but i just had to change the oil on Tues.

While I don't have any experience with 5-speed 4runners, the first thing I would do if it was mine is drain the trans, and refill it with Redline MT-90 Manual Transmission fluid. Then I'd know for a fact that a great full synthetic fluid was in there.

Besides that, I'm not much more help. All my previous vehicles that have been manuals have always been harder to put into gear when they are really cold, but not imposssible. And I always used a good full synthetic fluid in them too.

Not necessarily, but old, non-synthetic fluid would definitely act more like molasses when it's cold than fresh full synthetic.


Really need a 5-speed owner to chime in.

I've got a 97 5spd and during winter for initial 5 minutes of first drive of day it's slightly stubborn going into gear. This is mostly when going 1st-2nd or downshifting into 2nd from 3rd. Chances are your straight though...as long as it's not slipping.

Yea its not slipping its a brand new clutch it just dosent want to go into gear it starts to grind when its cold, but if i start it when i first wake and let it warn its fine.
