College guy, with 4Runner blues...

i just moved in to my dorm at the University of Alabama, and learned that I can't drive my truck to classes. So it sits, in the parking deck. I wanna drive... and now that I'm in school, no money for mods... that sucks too... Anyone else got college no drive blues?

But you have your car with you at college right? Then you can still drive off campus?

Why do you need to drive to between buildings to classes?
 
i just enjoy driving it... I drove 60 miles a day to and from work, and now i can't. I can still drive off campus but there's no money in my pocket so I can't do anything... haha... 4 years of this and I'll take a roadtrip for sure!
 
I lived off-campus at an apt and I didn't feel safe leaving my 4Runner outside all the time, so I left it at home. I only got to drive my 4Runner when I went home during the weekends. That only lasted a year, I ended up commuting from home the other 3 years (100 miles round trip)...at least I got to drive my 4Runner!
 
1st off college may not be the best time to have that dream ride. Just think about what you'll get when you get your 1st job after graduation? My 92 Lumina died 2 month after my 1st gig. Got a new $23 gran 96 Ford Ranger "The Humm Ranger". How things have changes since then.......... insert dream sequence ........

Just will make you appreciate the times you get to take it out for a run to the beer store or when you fill it up with all the kids from the dorm that don't have cars. Talk to the cute coeds walking to class.

Things you earn mean more than things given. Look for an easy campus job in the rec dept or doing something you dig? If you plan for 4 yrears in the dorm work as an RA. Then do all those mods you save for. Learn to do the work yourself to save $.

Less than 30% of Americans have a 4 year degree and 60% drop out after the 1st semster.

I have been working to pay for my truck since I was 15, it wasn't given to me... I have paid for everything that has gone into the truck, I'm putting myself through school, and looking for a job down here... But then again so is every other guy around too... I know that things earned are more meaningful that things received... Thanks for the good luck wishes!:cool:
 
First - Roll Tide! Gonna be a kick ass football sesason now that we have a real coach. Guess you already heard about SC getting arrested last night...

As you might have guessed I went to Bama. I was there in the dark years of the Perkins / Curry era (the 80's), when Shula was all he should have ever been, a player.

Anyway, I kept a car on campus then but I am sure the rules have changed. Even then, though it was not convenient to drive on campus. Best thing I did was buy a cheap motorcycle that gave me some fun and a great parking place to every class. A few of the girls I dated then also liked it. Go for it!
 
Yeah, a def Roll Tide... Question- Was Paty Hall around when you were here? that where i'm stayin and it's a shithole..

The earning potential of having a degree is vastly greater than not having one. Of course, there are those who were at the right place at the right time that can afford not to have a degree, but an opportunity like that is far and few.
 
I feal bad that your 4runner has to sit so long so I think some members of this Forum should come down to your school and drive it around for you :) . Maybe like three or four times a week?
 
Paty was already an s'hole over 20 years ago. BTW - you make me feel REALLY old with a question like that. I think that building was around since the 50's.
 
I had to sell my POS high school car before I went up to college, and didn't get a new ride, '89 Pickup in Nov. 2002 until I had been up there almost 2.5 years. You have the blues? I had the blues so bad not driving that when I finally got back in to a rusty Yota pickup I seriously shed a tear as I drove it back from dude's (guy I bought if from) house.
Don't worry about the truck at all, worry about school. The four or five years you spend there will go by so fast you might forget you even have a car and will definately forget the predicament your in now. Or if you don't forget you can laugh at it!
 
agreed. fastest 4 years of your life. Alot more things to do and worry about than driving the runner. Although having a car is a luxury when living close to school, ur lucky!
 
i had mine when i went to school, yet my campuses were at two different points in DC, so i was able to drive to class.

however, i wasn't too into the idea of street parking with everyone giving 'love taps' (i had a black, 2000 Sport) while trying to parallel park. and then there was the time someone chucked a slurpee on my truck when i was parked on the corner of Wisconsin and Mass Aves hahaha.
 
I'm off at school if any of you couldnt tell by my handle, heh. But yeah, this is my second year at VT and I moved off campus and out of the dorms this year thus allowing me to bring my rig to school. Living on campus I saw no need whatsoever for my car (granted, i didnt have it then) but now it's a necessity to get to class if i miss the bus.

Anyhow, kregg- consider yourself lucky you get it stored in a parking deck out of the weather. Blacksburg's winter isn't pretty, but thats not even the worst of my fears. Hell i'm actually looking forward to the not so perfect conditions. But every morning i walk out of my apartment just praying that I didn't get door dinged without me seeing it. It's a scary thing. Often i think of kids walking around late on the weekends and truely hope that I dont end up keyed. It's so nerve racking. Guess i better believe in the inherent good of mankind instead of all this worrying. :(

So, yep- Don't fear. Next year should be a blast. Just don't wish away this first year too quickly. Good luck man.

P.S. Bama aint got jack on the hokies! Beamerball baby!
 
My summer freedom ends Monday when my night classes start. I parked far but not too far to avoid door dings and the usual "rice rockets." I find it funny to watch cars driving around several times just to find the closest parking space.
 
I go to Rutgers but don't live there. I can park my 4Runner there, but it is not the safest area in NJ. For those who have said that college is the quickest four years of your life, I completely agree with you. I am a senior and can't believe how quick the last three years of my life went! Even though college is a lot of work, you make many friends and can have a great time. For example, I just got my ticket to the first home Rutgers football game! :D Seriously, don't worry about the 4Runner or anything else. It will take a few weeks to adjust to the college setting, but you will love it!
