To the OP: if you are taking those high level classes, your transcript should shine a little brighter than most others. I had a choice to take both AP English and AP History for my senior year, declined to do both and regret not doing such.

The reason I say to plan the trips to visit the schools is to speak with an admissions counselor at Clemson, NC State and VT about your current selection of courses, tell them what your goals are during your matriculation there, and hopefully come away with a better understanding of what they offer. Tour the engineering schools, and it never hurts to meet professors. When it comes down to acceptance time, and those in charge can put a name to a face, it may just help you get in.

Thank you. I've actually toured the engineering facilities of both VT and NC State. The VT admissions counselor visited my school last week and I got her business card, maybe I should shoot her a brief email to express further interest. I'm sure she gets a lot of them, but sure couldn't hurt. Especially since I'm doing ED to Tech haha.
 
I'm attempting to graduate with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering in 5 years. They have a 4+1 masters program. It would be pretty incredible if I could pull that off

I've got a longer post in the works, provided I can get my head above water in my projects. This is a topic about which I'm pretty passionate & opinionated...

That being said, this 4+1 plan would probably leave out an option for co-op or internships, which can be very beneficial if you are selective & score a good position. Just something to think about. Also consider that if you get you BSME & hit industry for a while, you can aim your master's work a little more poignantly. My company contributes for advanced degrees, but I'm not really seeing how one would further me at this point. Plus, if I'm really honest, my work & travel schedule are brutal & spending the little time I have at home with wife & 3yo son are more enriching.

I'm currently ahead in credits and plan on staying ahead in credits in order to allow time for an internship.

I am sure she gets a ton of them, but persistence and determination are omnipotent, and that is will get you in VT if you want to go.

Find out which ones teaches classes in the scope of study you want to pursue. Work this into the body of your email as well.

I used to live in Arroyo Grande. I've considered moving back to go to Cal Poly SLO for Mechanical Engineering but the only thing holding me back is the out of state tuition fees
Yeah out of state Tuition is outrageous right now. Luckily I'm in state. They have a great M.E program. I'm in Construction Managment
 
Also if you are trying to be any type of engineer, I would suggest taking the FE before you graduate. Not only is it easier to study for and pass while you are in school, the EIT certification is good for helping you get job interviews right out of college.

Thanks for the advice, and yep I'll keep you guys in the loop. I'll know in mid December what their decision is so it won't be too long.
 
Here are some random thoughts from a UC school BSEE graduate (1995) who's starting to get some grey hairs:

Your first two years as an undergraduate will probably be spent taking "weeder" classes like math, physics, chemistry and the odd GE like history. Most of these classes will have nothing to do with any specific major (EE vs. ME, etc, they make all engineering majors take 'em). You don't get to the "fun stuff" until your junior year when you start taking upper division electives. Ask yourself: is it really necessary to be spending big bucks at a research university taking "the basics" or would it be better to get them out of the way at a community college and transfer in as a junior? Only you can answer this, but the cost for the "college experience" is high, especially these days. Remember, at the end of the day your education is an investment and like any investment, you want to maximize your return.

Getting a Masters degree in engineering is of limited value based on my experience. It will help you land a job but once you've got several years experience under your belt its value diminishes. That being said, if you can earn a masters as part of a 4+1 program that's probably the best way to do it. Alternatively, get your employer to help pay for a masters later on (but understand working full time while going to school is no easy task).

There are *no women* in engineering. It's a sausage fest. This applies to school and to "real life" 20 years after you graduate. It won't be like the rest of campus with hot chicks everywhere. You won't be in those classes..mostly. You probably knew this (or maybe you didn't).

Get involved. Network. Meet contacts/connections any way you can. This is how you'll score your first "real job" or internship or whatever and it's what will open doors for you professionally.

Life in the cubicle after graduation isn't glamorous. You'll work 60+ hours a week on a regular basis for "The Man". He gets rich and you don't.

I made the transition into technical sales. After 8 years in a cube I couldn't stand being under fluorescent lamps any longer so I went into the field. Best move I ever made: I don't work long hours, I make very good money and every so often my company sends me to an event called President's Club which is an all-expense-paid trip to the Grand Wailea resort on Maui. You'll NEVER get to do anything like that if you stay in engineering, BUT having the engineering background enabled me to make this transition.

Note: I considered going back to get an MBA but after sitting in on several information sessions at my local universities (UCI, Chapman) I don't think the $100K they each charge is worth it. You can get the basics down by taking business classes for free online (from Wharton business school of all places) at Coursera.org.
 
One other thing: I don't know about VT but if you do consider going to a 4 year university (as opposed to starting at community college), consider a school that's founded on the principles of education (ie Cal Poly) rather than research (ie, UC). Research universities are staffed by tenured professors who would rather work on their science fair projects than actually teach you. It was obvious where I went. Several people I know who went to non-research based schools such as Cal Poly, Rose-Hulman, etc, were all MUCH better prepared for the "real world" than I was. UC did a lousy job of that in my case. I was totally clueless for the first year or two after graduation.

I ask because I went to a UC research school and would highly recommend it, especially for STEM majors.

UC schools often have the ability to enable students to work with cutting edge technology in a way that non research schools simply cannot.

A good example of this is computer science. My roommate was getting his masters degree in computer science at our school UC Santa Cruz. As a masters student he had access to the latest technology in data science, both hardware and software, including labs where the professors were conducting research. He co-authored a research paper that was published in a journal (I don't remember which one) and learned and worked with Apache Hadoop HDFS, eventually learning how to precisely code for Hadoop.

This was in 2009 & 2010 - a time when most people in the tech industry HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF HADOOP.

He graduated and left found work at Amazon in Seattle for starting at about ~ $120k.

Then 1 year later he left and went to work at a very well known start up in SF that focuses on a Hadoop data analytics and query product. He told me he doubled his salary.

I am not him but listening to this I was like holy sh$t - I need to go back for my masters!

The real point though is that he was studying, coding, designing and operating - hands on with Apache Hadoop in 2009 at a time when most of the people in Silicone Valley had never heard of Hadoop HDFS. He was able to do that because University of California Santa Cruz (BTW the Banana Slug's university is still on the top 100 list every year for academics and top 10 for best campus) is a research school.

I ask because I went to a UC research school and would highly recommend it, especially for STEM majors.

I went to UC Santa Barbara and my major was EE. UCSB is currently recognized as a prestigious research institution with multiple Nobel prize winners on the faculty including the guy who invented the blue LED. UCSB is also a Top 3 ranked party school. Work hard, play hard.

Nonetheless I stand by what I said earlier. Times may have changed since I was there in the early '90s but frankly there was nothing "state of the art" about my education. Just a bunch of tenured professors, some of them good, some of them horrible. There will always be people here and there who become exceptionally successful such as your friend (who was in the right place at the right time) but these are the exceptions more than the rule.
 
At the time I attended UCSB there was only one degree offered (EE), although I specialized in Computer Engineering. Other choices were semiconductor/device physics, RF and communications/control theory. Today they offer CE as its own, separate major.

One other comment regarding your friend's experience: in a graduate program, I can see the benefit of attending a research institution, especially one offering an area that floats your boat. But undergrad is a different story, especially the first two years of the program. Nothing but math, physics, chemistry and other classes designed to weed out the non-hackers. It's a grind. A new student could take that stuff at a community college and probably save anywhere from $25K-$75K in the process. Not carrying that student debt would be a huge benefit upon graduation.
