This book is by far the best off-road reference book I've used!

By the way, I can't wait to go back (with the new 4Runner) to Colorado and Utah, they have the most beautiful trails I have even been on. These trails complete the purchase of a great vehicle (The 4Runner). Everyone who owns an off-road vehicle has to experience these trails. :soapbox:
I would love to get a East-Coast trip going for about two weeks. It's a two day trip to get there and we could have a week or so to experience some of the greatest trails in the world.

As far as book documented trails, Medano Pass will be pretty close. It runs through the Great Sand Dunes National Monument and is a very highly rated trail for scenery. It'll be way closer if you run it in reverse of the most common way i.e., starting in the park and driving out. Then you could run it again back towards home. Might be faster than driving home on the highway. If you're willing to drive a bit you'll be pretty close to a bunch of "official" trails to the west and northwest, although, in October the risk of many of the high ones closing for snow is pretty high. I "think" the risk of that happening at Medano is lower. Probably some good stuff right there near Monte Vista that didn't make it into a book if you ask around locally. I'm actually in Colorado right now hitting a bunch of the book trails. The weather is incredibly warm for the season. As far as books, there are probably more than two but the two I see advertised are the Wells book referred to earlier and one called "4wd Adventures" by Massey & Wilson. I enjoy having both as there are quite a few trails unique to each book and on the trails that overlap, I like getting two perspectives. I find myself grabbing the "4wd Adventures" book the most as it's easier to read at a glance, has gps coordinates, and gives directions for starting the trails at either end. You can't go wrong with either book.

I was in the Salida/Buena Vista area last month, there are plenty of trails in that area with old mine towns and 13,000+ft passes. I have also heard great things of the trail in Sand Dunes NP which is rather close to you. I have the book "4wd Adventures" by Massey and Wilson that JB mentioned. Very good directions and illustrations. I think I found it on overstock.com for like $13. Have a good time that is a great area I cant wait to go back.

Awwwww, thanks! Now if I could just quit living at the office and get onto a trail some where before I go nuts. I only had 43 pages of unread forum messages to catch up on. The site is blocked at work.
