Colorado Trails?

I'm currently deployed and trying to plan an off road trip with my buddy and our girls. We want to drive my 4runner out to colorado, not too far from denver, and do some mountain exploring. Here's what we are looking for: a nice town to rent a house for a few days and stage from, a lake, some ghost towns to explore and easy offroading with no crazy articulation. I have a PP lift on FJ 17" wheels, but all the drive components are stock. Any suggestions would be appreciated. BTW Afghanistan is one GIANT 4runner commercial. I drive a turbo diesel 4runner every day over here.

Colorado offroading

There is a town west of Denver, may have what you're looking for. Central City. Has abandoned mining towns, and a nice 40 mile or so trail going past lakes and up a 13000 ft. peak. VERY NICE. I'll try to get you the coordinates from my GPS unit. You might also try to conatact Ron Helmuth from this site. He is a Denver resident. Good luck!

summer or winter trip?

You mean for next summer or this winter?

Many many trails out here but most unaccessible now.

Many close in trails to the Denver metro area but nothing all that scenic compared to Telluride/Durango areas of the SW part of state.

Crested Butte/Gunnison area also quite scenic....

Come on Out!

Glad to hear you're coming out... it's fun out here.

I can't help you with a place to stay, either check Craigslist or any random hotel guide.

For trails I recommend looking at http://www.traildamage.com/. They've got a good selection of trails and provide information on the high/low rating of each.

I drive a stock '97 4Runner. I try to stay on trails with a High-6 rating or lower. I did Wheeler Lake last year (High-7) and while I made it to the top it was definitely more trail then I wanted to do.

Cost may be a bit on the high side of things but maybe check out Snowmass??

I have only been to Colorado once but we stayed in Snowmass (about 10 minutes from aspen) and they had a ghost town, plenty of hiking, and of course going into Aspen is pretty cool too. Like I said it is a little resort kind of town but it's a really neat place. Not sure about the offroading, but I think most of Colorado is good for that.

Check out breckenridge, keystone, or vail. There are a bunch of trails that surround that general area and in the summer you can find great deals on places to stay. From there leadville, if i remember correctly, isnt too far and has a few ghost towns as well.

the I-70 portion between Vail and Idaho Springs has plenty of lodging choices and good deals during summer months. plus there are a ton of trails that are easy to reach from there. and once you get up the trails a few miles the scenery is great. and since that area was big into mining there are plenty of ghost town/mining leftovers to check out.

OK OK OK what is up with this "cant wait to go this summer" crap. If you cant wheel in the snow, what are you doin with a 4runner. Ok I went and checked out slaughter house today cause I wanted to get a group together for sunday and THERES NO SNOW. I went ahead and did the run BY MYSELF since I was up there with no lift and 265/75/16 A/T's. You all better come with me on Sunday or I'm gonna throw a fit:cursin: And I'm glad to see all you Colorado people comin out of your holes. Where have you been? I've been on this site since Nov. and I've only seen like 5 Coloradoans on here. C'mon you gotta represent the best wheelin state in the country! I swear, Toyota designed the 4Runner for CO. Go on craigslist and search 4runner in the parts area in every state, Colorado has the most results of any state in the USA.:bigok: HA thats right, CO effin rules!!! :rocker: Here's a pic of slaughter house from today. All you "wait till summer" people better be with me on Sunday or we're fighting.
