Colorado Wheeling June ???

So, there was a April wheeling trip that I missed, then a May wheeling trip that I missed. Now I live in Fountain and no one has scheduled anything for June. Maybe I can instigate a movement to the mountains this month. I know Footofgod is down, anyone else?

Days are flexible so post up your preferred trails and times.

I'm off work pretty much all month. Let's see what everyone's free time looks like and we can make a more permanent date. I'm new to the area and have gone around a little bit with Bill (footofgod) to a couple trails off of stagecoach.

Shall we aim for something around the 15th-19th time line? And as far as where I'm flexible as well.

How about Saturday the 23rd? Gives me enough time to take off work.
 
You guys should do Independence Trail, NE of Canon City--it sounds like a fun drive with some mild challenges. Here's a portion of the Charles Wells/Funtreks guidebook description: Tall rock walls and giant boulders. Expect rollovers and vehicle damage. Roll cage and giant tires a must. Winch anchor points provided. Yeah, this sounds right up your alley! Okay, maybe not. (Hint--this is the only trail in the book the author did NOT drive--self-preservation must've got the better of him--LOL)

Maybe this time next year when I have my solid axle, armor, lockers, winch, ect... For now I'm still learning how to drive in the dirt and on the rocks. Heck, my runner is still somewhat stock. I'll get there though. :lookout:

Ive gone to spectate at independence. Its the craziest trail i've ever seen.

I would love to go on the trail run but im going to have to wait till next month. Gotta spend 2 grand to go to my sisters wedding in chicago so im a bit cash strapped right now.

Just to be clear, SVD, that was meant as a joke, not a comparison of vehicle capabilities--I probably wouldn't take my rig on that trail, either. I like the occasional hardcore route, but I don't have rockbuggy capabilities, and have no intention of making one. Your post got me curious as to what trails from that area were in my book, and that one just sounded outrageous. As the author puts it, when you see the trail, you'll wonder how ANY vehicle could ever drive it. Have fun and try to be safe, bros!

Luckily I had already warned SVD that was a trail we were not quite ready for LOL!

Neither am I, Bill...neither am I. I've been tinkering with some pretty hairy obstacles, the last one of which was tall enough that I was dragging my front driveshaft on the breakover, but I still draw the line a bit on THIS side of the lunatic fringe (LOL)!
 
No offense taken Bob. Maybe some day I can get to the point where I can do some of the hardcore armageddon 4wheeling, but not today.

To sum it up:

Wheeling is on the 23rd. There is no set trail yet but unless anyone objects or suggests otherwise, I am leaning towards Seran Wrap and Eagle Rock. They are both in close proximity of each other and they both seem to provide some excellent obstacles.

I don't know if I'm mentioning the obvious here but you do have to have a OHV registration to wheel on any of these trails. See https://www.staythetrail.org/faq/index.php for more info. I plan on purchasing an annual pass which is $25.25. That is dirt cheap!!

If you plan on attending post here and we can come up with a meeting place and possibly make a reservation somewhere for a group dinner after we're done wheeling. If no one wants to go out for dinner I'm always open to the idea of firing up my grill and having some beer at my place :D
 
This sounds awesome. I think I might have to try and make it provided I can get my sliders on in time. I have a few custom designs in my rocker panels from Eagle Rock and Saran Wrap. I'm trying not to temp fate so I need to get my sliders on before I try those trails again.

Also, maybe i've been ignorant but I didn't know about the OHV registration. I thought OHVs were recreational vehicles without license plates. I'll have to grab a permit.
 
I was kind of surprised when I saw that on the FAQ also. I'm not sure how many people have the permits but I would hate to get caught with my pants down and pay a fine much more than what the permit costs. Plus, usually when you buy OHV permits, that money goes to maintaining the trails or the roads that lead to the trails. It's all good though, the permit is $25 so it's cheap insurance to be safe.

I may have a buddy from Denver show up for this trip as well. This tentatively makes 5 vehicles.

I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised. I figured we would have had more interest in this. It seems like the last couple Colorado wheeling trips that were advertised on this forum had at least 10 rigs or so wanting to attend.

Maybe we need to find a different trail that may be a little more mild? I have never been on either of these trails but according to the pics on trail damage they seemed to be somewhat mild with some cool little challenging spots.
 
most of the denver crew have slightly modified rigs and probably aren't ready for the hard core stuff yet.
that said, the trail only has a 5 for the low end rating so it looks like damage will be avoided unless we pick the hard lines.
i'm checking the schedule (wife's permission) but might be down for a run.
