Comments/Concerns on my new '04 4Runner!

Hey all. Just picked my '04 4runner Sport up last Friday, and I LOVE it. I just had a few questions about it however, since it's certified pre-owned and I have a 3k comprehensive warranty for anything that's broken. (And the "MAINT" light came on tonight on the way home from work, so I'm a little irritated about having to take it in already and thought I'd check on a few things from seasoned vets beforehand...)

A few things I'm wondering:

1) Is there supposed to be a bell or warning "beep" or "ding dong" noise that sounds while I have the lights turned on and the key is out of the ignition (basically, the "hey, your lights are still on, make sure to turn them off" sound)? It's been this way in every other car except this one, wondering if maybe that's broken...

2) Should there be lights under the buttons for the Lock/Unlock and Windows Up/Down on the drivers side door when the lights on the car are turned on? Currently, the only one illuminated is for the window up/down for the driver's door (but not the other 3 window up/down buttons) and it looks like there may be lights under there but they don't come on (or are burned out) so at night I can't see them and have to reach down and fumble with the buttons to lock/unlock the doors, which is slightly annoying...

3) Any reason just the driver's door unlocks when I shut the car off? It's pretty annoying to have to get out and hit the unlock on my remote to get all the rest of the doors (including the trunk) to unlock to unload the car, etc. Shouldn't all the doors unlock? Perhaps this is just something I'll have to get used to.

Right now, those are the only things I'm unsure about. (Dealer forgot to give me the user manual so I can't check on them either >:P)

Thanks guy!

1. No beeps, but if you hit the LOCK button on the remote twice they turn off, or turn off automatically within a minute or two.

2. Theres only the one light, you just gotta get used to using by touch.

3. When you go back to the dealership tell them you want them to program all the doors to unlock when shifted into park. Its a dealer controlled setting.

The MAINT light just means you need an oil change, or they forgot to reset it when they changed the oil.

You guys are awesome. Until I get the owner's manual, are there any other cool tricks I should know? I just figured out that the button on my remote rolls the window down on the tailgate, which is pretty damn sweet. I'm guessing you can't have that rolled back up again until you have the key in the ignition and use the button on the dash? (That's what I've found at least)

Glad the MAINT light isn't anything serious. The oil change shouldn't be needed for another 2k miles at least, so hopefully it's not a bug, but I guess we'll find out.

Thanks again guys!

Search on here to see how to reset the light, its pretty simple. You can roll the back window up by putting the key in the lock on the rear hatch and turning it to the left I think. Just hold it there and it will go up. Or down if you turned it the other way.

you can reset the main light by:

1. hold down the speedometer reset button with the key at the "off" position.

2. turn on key to "acc" position while holding down the button

3. the light should be off after 7 sec.

Tony,

That

You can program the locks yourself without going to the dealer. You can make them lock/unlock automatically, or you can set them to never lock/unlock unless you press one of the lock buttons or the key fob buttons.

If you got an owner's manual, take a few minutes to read it.

Congratulations!

If I remember correctly, your odometer must be set to display odometer mileage, *not* one of the trip meters. (Set it this way before turning off the key, then follow the above.

Don't remember if it was on the 4runner or the Corolla, but it took a bit to figure this out :)

And Door Locks? I had the dealer reprogram them for the maximum delay. It WILL relock if you don't open a door fast enough.

I travel a lot and would unlock it from the house, but by the time I got my butt to the car with arms loaded, the doors would lock :(

I ended up with an aftermarket lock/alarm/starter/etc.

Just remember to NEVER leave the keys in the 4Runner (dash, seat, etc) without having a window down a little- just in case. It drove me nuts that it relocked itself (sometimes I swear I heard it laugh! :) )

It's a great vehicle. It has some quirks, but is my favorite of all the vehicles I've owned or driven.

Oh- and when changing the oil filter...no, there isn't any way to avoid spilling oil on the skid plate, but it blows off eventually!

Here's another trick: If you use the key in the rear hatch to close the window (clockwise), all the doors will lock, even if the window is already up. It will also trigger an "exit delay" in which the doors don't lock until the last door closes.

At least on my 04 V8 Limited with the factory-upgraded alarm.

Hope you enjoy it! I certainly have.

By default, the 4Runner will relock the doors if the unlock button on the remote is pressed and a door is not opened within 30 seconds.
