Comparative gas mileage betweem 3rd and 5th gen.

I am considering getting a 1999-2000 4runner because I love them and i currently have a 2011. Can I expect a big difference in the gas mileage?

I don't know what the newer 4runners get, but you can expect between 15-17 in the city, I believe this is what the milage has been rebadged to. It used to be 17-21 city/highway if I remember correctly.

I usually get 19-21MPG in mine, but i have a proper 5 speed, the autos get worse.

What are you getting in your 2011?

My 01' automatic gets 15-18, depending on city/highway. I don't have any heavy mods and I'm running 31's.

There was a thread in the 3rd gen section couple months ago asking owners to post what MPG's they were getting. That may get you more info on the 99-00.

Granted I have a dirty IAC or something (still trying to figure it out)...
But I get closer to 12-13 and I am sure I am not the only one on here who sees mileage like that.
I also have a 5speed but I drive like a total nut job.
That having been said I highly recommend the 3rd Gen! You will never look back, I have many friends with 4runners ranging from the 1st gen to the 5th, my 4runner inspired all of them to follow suit and they all agree that it is the best, its a perfect balance of minimum creature comfort and functionality with neither being compromised.
If you havent already seen the top gear "Prius vs. M5" you should check it out it shows very clearly that the manner in which a car is driven makes all the difference.

i get **** gas mileage as well. at this point, i dont even pay attention. i get gas when i need it.

In my 2011 I do mostly hywy and I do get average 21. Upon filling it up and i think I have a 23gallon tank it reads 386 miles expected.

Good responses so far and I thank everyone. I have been flipping 4r's every few years and I should have stayed with my 2000.

I average 17-18 mpg pretty regularly in my 98. It's a 3.4L, 4.10 factory gears, automatic, 285/70R17 BFG A/T's on Tundra wheels. Not too bad, IMO.

I'm getting 16-18 with my 98 Limited with 4:30 gears and 265/75R16 with 70/30 city/hwy with toyo OC AT tires.
