I traded my FZJ80 for a new 4runner. I finally felt like Toyota again built a vehicle with the same rugged, dependable, and durable nature of the FJ80 series vehicles. The 4th generation 4runner is within inches size wise of the FJ80 and it has the engine, transmission, transfercase of the larger Landcruiser it is the same vehicle as the GX470 but with better looking sheet metal and more modern aluminum trim on the inside versus the old fashion wood trim. When I originally bought my used 95 FZJ80 back in 1998, I also considered a new 4runner. I felt like back then the Landcrusier was significantly superior to the 4runner. That has changed with the 4th generation 4runner. I think we got lucky that Toyota is using platform and drivetrain sharing to save money. I wonder how many shoppers just look at the sheetmetal and don't understand whats underneath? I think Toyota is making a big mistake not naming the 4th generation 4runner - Landcruiser Pardo.

That's good to know. I looked at a few pre-owned Land Cruiser's as well as the new Discovery LR when I was selling the old rig. I was under the impression the LC was the hardiest of the toyota lot. That's why I wanted one but they cost so much more and there was not many used available. I guess most hold on to them for a long time? I love my new runner but it's a bit low (for now) Much lower than the older ones I think?

Only a couple of inches, not a big deal unless your going to be driving over logs in the woods. Plus I have to admit that the full floating front and rear axles on the FZJ80 are way cool but not needed unless your a off road junky. Plus the solid axles make the 80 series ride like a lumber truck, and they require a lot more maintance.
