Go to a junkyard and get a rear view mirror that has one. There is a good write up that explains how to do it...that's what I did. The manufacturer that makes them (can't think of the name) makes them for essentially all vehicles. I got mine off of a Cadillac

My mirror has it and I keep it turned off. I literally never need to know the compass bearing on the direction I'm heading.
It's not like I'm navigating off of a map everyday either...
Because we move to a new city pretty much every 18-24 months and rely on Google Maps to get around. While great, Google Maps does not have a compass built in so when it says "Go west on Main Street" we never know which way that is.
I have tried the phone compasses and they don't work real well unless you hang the phone out the window...

Thanks, I just dumped about 650 into a touch screen unit with everything but nav, so this is why I ma asking for just a compass.
You can install a Gentec mirror; it's autodimming and has a compass. They can be found on eBay for a reasonable price.
Here's the link to a thread on T4R about installing one of those mirrors. I was going to do it myself, but I prefer a non-dimming mirror. While I miss the mirror compass too, my NAV unit is my compass.

Get something like this, made for a car. Be sure to calibrate it per the instructions. I put similar ones in my Jeep and F150. Still have the one in the 98 F150 that I installed in 1998 and it still works even with the fluid long gone.

Be sure to get the auto version, not the marine version, because it needs to be calibrated to compensate for all of the metal in a car.
I never put one in the 4 Runner because it shows direction in the mirror. In hindsight, the real compass has a lot more meaning when you look at it.
