Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Methane

Hey has anyone on the T4R forum had anything to do with CNG mods to their trucks?

CNG and LPG are both popular fuel types in overseas contries and I would love to lower my running cost (and stop buying imported oil products)

I remember from Australia when I lived there that LPG gave about 10 percent less MGP, about 15 percent less power, but was about one third the price of Gasoline (or Petrol as they call it there)

Has anyone upgraded a T4R to LPG or CNG on the forum? what do you think? I am most interested to know if anyone has upgraded a 4th gen V6, since that is what I have.

Hello,

First i want to thank all the people that make this forum possible. I have been following the forum since nov. 2010 when i bought my 2003 V6 SR5 with 75k original miles. Your info and shared experience are priceless!!!!

As you already know gasoline prices are getting worse, just a month ago i installed 5th generation secuential CNG (compressed natural gas) kit in my truck. The installation of the kit was carried out by a goverment certified workshop in mi country (Dominican Republic). Here the CNG is 65% cheaper than the gasoline, so you can imagine how much i am saving rigth now. It is the best mod i have done in my truck so far. I will prepare some pics and description of the components and post them.

Who has the better set for the DIYer? Seems there are two types; sequential and mixer type systems. What are you running? please share your experiences.

Hello DRCOFEE,

I have the 5th generation of secuential CNG system installed on my 2003 V6 SR5. The system consist in:

Fuel tank (15 cubic meter of natural gas at 200 bars)
ECU (linked to toyota ECU, it takes operational signals of toyota ecu to manage natural gas system)
Fuel inyector (one per cylinder)
Reductor (to reduce the pressure from the tank 200 bar to 1.5 bar, which is the injector rail pressure).

The installation of the system it is not DYI. You need a certified shop to take care of it. Shop gave me 1 year of warranty (never used it). CNG was installed in my truck at 78K and now it has 112K, so far no problems. Engine keeps very strong without any oil consuption. Here in Dominican Republic CNG is 65% cheaper the the gasoline price. So far, it is the best modification i have done in my truck, of course in economical terms. Check my picture albums to have an idea. I do not in the states, but here we have certified shops to carry out that kind of convertions. Also the system give you the option to run the engine in gasoline or CNG.

THAT'S cool. Where do you put the CNG tank, in the spare tire cavity? How many miles do you get on a tank?

The tank is in the trunk. Because of the 4.0 liters engine i am getting just 80 miles per tank, some people installl a bigger tank or two tanks. The fuel station is two blocks way from my daily job so for me is ok.
