Conceal Carry

"The 31 states that have "shall issue" laws allowing private citizens to carry concealed weapons have, on average, a 24 percent lower violent crime rate,

Where you getting your stats from???

Violent crime across the nation is down (this is good). Even in states which have very strict gun laws (NY, MA). But states like Texas which has one of the most lax gun control laws in the US has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country. Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana all have far more lax gun laws and are at the top of the list of states with the most violent acts of violence.

As far as Canada goes, I think gun registration is purely to keep the number of guns down and to hold people more responsible for their firearms, it places more responsiblity on the owner to be safe and to properly store and maintain your firearm because your name is on it essentially. Also helps law enforcement to keep the statistics.

As for crime rate, it might help a little bit but if a criminal wants a gun, he's going to find one.

When the zombie apocalypse happens I think I'll move to Texas though.

"Gun Ownership Rises to All-Time High,
Violent Crime Falls to 35-Year Low

Gun ownership is actually DOWN in many states...NOT HIGHER...and even in those states violent crime is down...So Gun ownership has NOTHING to do with the lower crime rates. Violent crime is down EVERYWHERE...not just in states that have lax gun control laws.

BTW I'm NOT for any more gun control laws...We have enough on the books. The only point I'm making is you're making a false analysis. Your conclusions are WRONG.

Just for giggles, and I have no idea, but did the definition of "violent crimes" change at all in the last so many decades? There may be some crimes that are now "hate crimes" instead of a plain ol violent crime. I've seen instances where law makers changed a definition to get the stat that they are after. Food for thought. I have no trust for any law maker, right or left.

Nowadays, I drive plain cars to avoid attention. (Acura is only barely-there-luxury...so it does not count! :D )

Is that really neccessary? Is this a precaution for being car jacked? Do people in nice cars get victimized often down there? you just seem very paranoid.

not trying to be offensive or anything I'm just legitimately curious, you make Texas out to be a super dangerous place like it's some militia run town in a dangerous part of Africa or something, just trying to understand.

What area do you live in? I've been to Houston and surrounding area and it didn't "seem" too bad.

And yet, you think that DC Runner's conclusion that decreasing crime rates is due to vast improvement in police work?? Especially when DC Runner has NOT given ONE SHED OF EVIDENCE TO PROVE HIS POINT. Bias are we?

Oh no dude....a Canadian in Texas...you WILL be the Zombie!...don't do it man... hehehe....lol I walked into a "TeaParty" reunion in a BBQ restaurant in Texas last year as the lone little Canadian where gun laws and subsidised health care prevail......it wasn't that bad. Had some nice discussions with the people at my table, agreed on some stuff and agreed to disagree on others. Quite pleasant acctually. Didn't see any crazzies. Just regular people.

I travelled a lot for my last job, 90 flights last year. Lots of time in Texas and Virgina. And I loved it. Texas is great. Maybe that is why I now want to go get my gun license and start hunting, and have this urge to protect my family and to be able to at least take down a deer for meat if the apocalypse happens. And I'm not joking either. One of the reasons for the built up 4runnerZs is, that if all hell breaks loose, I can take my 4runner and 4Run out of what's left of the city and into to the woods......

Why did it come down to laws, and police.....it's a discussion forum I guess. We discuss stuff, it's what keeps it fun. As long as no one calls the other names and gets all upset and stuff :bash: it's all cool. This can get to be a heated subject for sure. Or unless the original poster feels its way off topic and his question is still left unanswered.

Yup, scared of carjacking. It's rare but unfortunately, a carjacking last year at a place that i go to often (aka asian shopping strip in Houston) took a life of a young girl. When i was single, i did not mind driving the expensive car. With my two toddlers and wife, i do mind quite a bit...and yeah, i am paranoid. Over the past several months (this year), there have been stories of daylight break-in in surround suburbs of Houston (Missouri City, Sugar Land, etc)...and these suburbs are well to do places.

Not offended at all. And yeah, i am growing more and more paranoid...postal in 5...4...3...2...1....

It's been fun...but gotta go back to work. Have a good afternoon forum members! :)

Have any of you guys ever needed the guns you carry?

Serious question, I'm curious.

I've never needed the seatbelt or airbags in my T4R either; but should that day come where I am in an accident I am going to be extremely happy that they are there.

Same thing goes for a handgun carried for self-defense, odds are extremely low that you will ever need to use it; but if you are in a situation where you do, you are going to be happy to have it with.

I loved Texas when I was there too, I have friends there but I think I would weigh 500 lbs if I lived there, I couldn't believe the food there. So good and the portions were ridiculous. (Pappadeaux Mmmm)

Anyways, back on topic.

To sum up the OP it sounds like the answer is do not leave a gun in your car.

Again maybe it's all the time I spent in the states after 7 years of travelling there. But....exactly, the governments way of trying to limit the number of guns you can have all the while making it look like a worth while cause.

Personally, for hunting, I guess I wouldn't need 50 riffles and a room full of ammo. I would register my gun. But maybe I shouldn't....then they also know where to go get the guns from when the apocolypse happens. I don't tell the Government how many shirts I have, or if I buy Crest or Colgate, or if I prefer Pepsi or Coke. Of wait maybe they already know everytime I swipe my airmiles card. This can go on for ever.

Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing. Just sitting on the fence. But I don't put anything passed them at all these days.

HAHAHA. You seriously have like a 2nd grade grasp of things. Not one shred of evidence? But what about ALL of my pasted hyperlinks???? Are they NOT as good as yours???

Rates of Household Firearm Ownership and Homicide Across US Regions and States, 1988

This seems to suggest, counter to your hyperlink, that communities WITH more firearms have MORE homicides.

BUT wait! I didn't draw that conclusion, because unlike someone with little to no grasp on how to understand complex problems; I know that my study does not some causality. Neither does yours.

But, you don't care. Some article, written by someone, says what you want to hear; and you believe it. You sir, are the gullible masses.

neither of them are right. Neither are wrong. When I posted numerous hyperlinks to the raw data, I was trying to give you access to actual information and not the opinions of people with motives to juke the stats.

MikeinNh is right. You are drawing the wrong conclusions. I have no bias. You don't seem to get simple quantitative methods. Maybe you should go to high school? Or at least a class on statistics...

Good point.

The only retort I have is the liklihood of being in a car accident vs. being in a situation where a handgun is needed but apparently some places it happens more often then you'd like.

Got me on that one.

DC...still waiting...are you playing hard to get?? Where is your data to show that police department vast improvement have resulted in low crime rates???

I showed you my data (bias or not) to my arguments. How about you do the same? You've been very dodgy about this. WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Try to re-read my post before you jump to conclusions.

And why are you posting links from 5 years ago....How about CURRENT...

Gun crime statistics by US state: download the data. Visualised | World news | guardian.co.uk

Again....your logic is flawed....If gun ownership were the reason for the decrease in crime (as you claim)....then Texas and Tennessee should be among the lowest because they have very lax gun laws...yet they are among the HIGHEST....Your conclusions don't hold water based on the FACTS.

I personally know two women that had to use their firearm to protect themself, both were attempted carjacking with the attacker trying to get them back in their car. No shots were fired, just producing the handgun did the job. They were both scared out of their wits afterward, especially at the thought of what could have happened to them. The odds are very slim but it only takes one. There are alot of people in my area now that hate that you have more than them and just plain want to hurt you or take your stuff. I personally had a guy much larger than I threaten my life at my place of buisness. When I gave the police his name, they knew him and was suprised that the guy didnt attack me. That doesnt make me feel all warm and cozy if you know what i mean. The city i work in is a major hub for drug traffiking, or so I'm told. Most people probably wouldnt even notice but seeing the changes over the years is a little unsettleing. i dont need statistics to tell me what my odds are of attack. Last I checked I wear big boy shorts and can make that decision on my own.

As I said..I'm not really for any more laws on gun control. I'm NOT convinced that gun control laws do any good....And the same conclusion can be made for NO gun control laws....Lax gun laws aren't deterring crime either.

I've lived in big cities...and by far the BEST thing you can do to protect yourself is to NOT put yourself in those situations and to be highly aware of your surroundings. When my daughter was going to college in Boston I made sure she was very street wise before she went to school there. Most of the time she was on campus..but many times her and her friends would go into Boston clubbing or shopping. She never once had a incident. She made sure she didn't put herself in that situation.

I have neighbors who are BIG gun advocates and own and carry. They feel the ONLY way to protect themselves is with a fire-arm. Well for some people that's true...But this guy's my neighbor..and we live in a nice neighborhood with very very little crime. They have office jobs that are not dangerous...nor where the office is - is it dangerous!!! It's their right..and I respect them for it. I just think that the ONLY step to protect yourself is a gun is not very smart...and a little paranoid if you ask me.
