Gun-nut: n. 1. one who has an abnormal preoccupation with the subject of guns. 2. an infatuate with guns with a foolish or unreasoning passion. 3. one who's conversation is predictably or unusually dominated by the subject of guns.

Just like car-nuts, hunting-nuts, ATV-nuts, boating-nuts... I know plenty of 'em. Obsessive people can be sooo irritating!

But as far as lock boxes or gun vaults, I would not have a gun without one. I did a lot of research before deciding on my lock box. It's very simple, can be opened with a key, but that key too is hidden, and I did not buy this till someone told me about how they had a friend that have a loaded 357 in the box, and somehow it went off. The bullet never existed the box, but made a huge cone. I was sold after hearing that.

You can hide the key but not the gun? I'm pretty sure this concept wouldn't pass as a strong security measure under any kind of interpratation. Rather this is just another misguided solution thrown at the symptom of a problem. The net effect is we all lose a little slice of freedom and gain a false sense of comfort in exchange.

A lock box will not protect your kids from killing themselves or others if they are intent on doing so. Sure it makes access to the firearm marginally more obscure but that's the extent of its protection. As was already stated, harmful things can exist anywhere in the world and as a parents we can hardly contorl those within our environments and have almost no chance of controlling those outside. Fortunately, there is a better approach.

IMHO, there is no better solution to gun safety, and safety in general, than education. Education means much much more than a simple 5 minute conversation with your kids. As parents, it's our responsibility to teach our kids--not just about guns but about all manner of perils that await them in this world.
Only then can they grow up to be well rounded citizens of the world with the proper perspective of the Universe and the willingness to take responsibility for their actions. (that sounds a littly preachy doesn't it? :):))
 
I never ever disputed that education is important, but I do not agree it's the best solution; for all the education in the world can not dictate how someone will act after being educated. You can send a girl to an all girl Catholic school but that does not mean she will believe everything she is being taught.

As far as the lock-box, yes it is true that once they have the key they can get in, but then they have to deal with the two locks I will have on the gun. I might one day invest in a gun safe; they are cool and secure. But I am planning/hoping to have up to 2 guns: 22, and a higher caliber. So knowing that getting a gun safe is sort of a waist of money, unless use it for other things. But my wife says she won't go into a safe with a gun in it, but then she said she will go to a gun safety class when she wants to. The definition of that is that she will never go to any gun class.

And there is the fundamental concept with which we may disagree. I do not believe I should nor do I want to dicate anyone's behavior. That's where accountability comes in to the discussion. Teach them well and let them be accountable for their own actions.

Strict and severe punishment is a good thing. Loss of freedom(s) isn't. If you want a lock box, trigger lock, safe, ...; that's all fine with me. I might even agree it's a good idea. However, when that choice gets dictated to others in the form of a gun law, that's where things start to fall apart. A good choice for one gun owner may not be so great for others. Utlimately, the only thing we can universally hang our hats on is the need for education. Education works to solve the underlying problem while promoting civil liberties (hey maybe the ACLU should be behind this issue :)).

BTW, I realize you probably weren't promoting the mandatory gun safe laws we have here in CA, but rather just stating your opinions on responsible gun ownership. And in that sense, I whole heartedly agree. A good safe can make a lot of sense -- in many instances.

I truely admire your determination to keep your pistol out of your children's hands, Iman. May you never have a need for it in an emergency.

You can't protect people from themselves. All you can do is teach.
 
Hey guys, while I am aware the determination of a child, this thought never crossed my mind. I was telling the guys at the gun shop about our conversation, and they said that you are better off with a trigger lock, because with a cable lock all they need is cable cutters.

Many, and I also own a wrecking hammer that I used to help my dad break down a stone wall. So either way I am screwed.
 
Or...

Get a trigger lock, secure it to your pistol, swallow the key.

If an intruder breaks into your house threatening you and yours, you will poop your pants, presenting the key to the trigger lock!
