So I've searched for info on air filters and have come across some interesting thoughts. I have always been under the impression that aftermarket air filters such as K&N and True Flow were the way to go. But several posts have got me wondering about their effectiveness. So I guess what I am after, is it a good idea to put a reusable filter in my 4Runner (of which I own 2, an 08 and 97) or should I stick with the basic paper? What filter should I use? I searched for a True Flow for my 97 but no one has them. Please help. My objective is to help my fuel economy. Air movement is key, and I know it won't be a huge increase, but every little bit helps.

I think the issues has been oiled filters and the fact that many people over oil them which can cause a mess. If you are talking about a direct replacement filter, I don't know if you would see that big of difference over a standard filter but if you want to go K&N just be light handed with the oil. I personally would just deckplate mod and forget about it.

The issue with K&N filters is they dont filter as well(this is controversial) but they allow the engine to breath more. On city driving this is fine but offroad they will clog easier since the oil attracts dirt and more dust will pass through.
They are for city and avg driving use. They are a pain to clean some times but last forever if taken care of. I think you can go either way and be fine, Ill stick with a paper since I offroad alot. I bought one for my moms pathfinder and its lasted 5 years
