Confusion on Rotor Size

I got a good deal on Amazon for Brembo rotors and Akebono pads, spent a good chunk of the afternoon carefully taking things apart, and working the rust welds only to run into a major hurdle.

The Brembo rotors say they are for a 16" rim and measure around 12.5" in diameter but the old rotors I took off are about 11.5" in diameter, so I cant mount the caliper with the Brembos.

So what has me really confused is that my 01 SR5 came with 16" 3 spoke rims from the factory but for some reason uses the 15" rim's rotor and brake caliper?

Can someone help point me in the right direction on what's going on?

yes, the 4WD rotors are 12.56" in diameter.


it's a chance for you to upgrade your brakes. You already have the rotors and pads. All you need are the 4WD calipers which have the stamp S13WM, iirc.

Its worth moving up to larger 12.5" rotors, mine stop on a dime, don't fade and don't overheat causing warping.

Look for angled vane rotors if you can find them, the vanes are designed to be angled to grab air and funnel thru to center for better cooling than straight, non-angled rotors. I found those in centric brand.

That's truly bizarre as mine is 4WD but the rotors I took off are about 11.5" and I dont have the cash to buy new calipers and mounting hardware.

I wonder if there was a factory upgrade for the larger rims but the hardware underneath stayed the same for a 15".

Not all 4WD's got 16" wheels.

He likely has a 15" wheel truck, despite having 16" wheels on there now with 4WD (previous owner upgrade).

Rear wheel cylinders are also smaller on the 15" wheel trucks, so upgrade those at the same time to keep things balanced front and rear.
