Considering 02 t4r

Hello all,

I have an opportunity to buy an 02 t4r from a friend of the family and am looking for some feedback.

It is an Sr5, 4wd, Dorado Gold, leather, automatic, 16" wheels, Reese Hitch.

Paint is shiney, but now for the negatives:

The roof has some dents in it, not real noticeable unless you get up high, the front bumper has a dent, again not major, just an indentation in the chrome, the driver's side fender has a crease in it, nothing major again, but noticeable. It needs new tires, and the service on it has been done at the Toyota dealer. I have all the records on it, mostly oil changes and the 30k service, is all that has been done to it, as well as some type of suspension recall.

The wife and I are looking for something to use ocassionally, this would not be an everyday vehicle. I am thinking about 4-5k per year on it. It currently has 71k on it.

Looking for input as far as pricing, what it is worth, as well as any potential problem areas. The underside is clean and rust free, it has not been off road, other than an occasional dirt road. I am thinking I can buy it for between 7-8k.

From what you've described, sounds like you've found a winner! Besides the few negs you found (which seem to be all exterior), sounds like a good overall deal. Especially if you can get it for $7-8K.

excellent price for last year of 3rd gen

If you can get it for $8K or under snap it up.

Similar ride here is $13K.

Axle seals are a common problem with our 3rd gens. Can be expensive to have others replace them.

Timing belt will be due at 90K and a lot of folks do waterpump at same time.

Sounds like a solid deal. Maintenance records, relationship with the owners, good price. Even at $8k, it's a great deal, IMO.

Make sure the 4WD system works, and put it in 4LO and hit the CDL button to make sure that works (to the left of the steering wheel).

The suspension recall was a Lower Ball Joint issue. Had that done in my old 02 as well. They are great vehicles and it should serve you well for a long long time. Just put some nice A/T tires on there and have fun with it!

8k or under would be a good deal. Your location has a lot to do with the price of cars.

You will need to do the timing belt in about 20k miles so that is an added cost to think about.

All the problems you listed aren't major and could probably be repaired for about $400-$500.

Thanks guys for all of your feedback and input. Looks like I am going to pass on the 4runner at this point. I am going to go ahead and sell it instead of keep it. With the times being what they are, this would be a 4th car and I really am thinking I may just let my money sit for a rainy day. But in the meantime, I do get to enjoy it. I am going to go ahead and put a set of tires on it, and it is listed for sale. With the new tires, they are going to want $9000 for it, as they were giving me a special price with it being in the family so to speak. So looks like a nice T4r with a few cosmetic issues is on the market. I do have to say I really enjoy driving this thing, but I have to go with my head on this one, and not spend the cash. Thank you all for your input and feedback!
