Considering an 07 sport

We've currently got a 2004 Limited with 181k on it and it's great, but we were looking to upgrade to the "facelift" version of the 4th gen. We found a nice looking 1 owner sport with only 110k for a good price. The only problem is that the owner had an independent shop flush the trans about 6 months ago. How terrified should I be of this? They did not use toyota fluid and he did say they used a machine to "push" the fluid through.

I would ask them to confirm what fluid was used as there are some equivalents (of course it's been disputed to death).

If the transmission is working well and everything else is up to par, I wouldn't let it stop me but I'd take it to the dealer for a flush as the first thing.

Agreed. Least he attempted to do it. Instead of never touching it. Either way. I'd get it redone at the dealership for peace of mind.

I have an '07 Sport and if your mechanic checks it out and says okay, I agree with the previous posters. My local dealer, Cherokee Toyota (Metro Atlanta), did a transmission service with Toyota WS for $189, so I'm thinking if you're in NC, it should be at least in the ballpark.

If it's 4WD, be sure all of the modes work properly. Ours had a bad actuator but the dealer fixed it before we took delivery.

All that aside, we absolutely love our 'Runner. If you need a resource for any specific questions you have, fire away. Happy to help.

It should be fine

as long you dont see any seepage or drips which could mean that the process they used tore some seals. Also 2nd the rec about making usre that 4lo and the central diff locker work before buying.

Enjoy your 4.5 gen
