Considering an Engine Swap.

So i have a large amount of money i am willing to put into this 4runner, i am considering all options for more power or better fuel economy. My 2 considerations as of know are importing a Helux Turbo Diesel engine or going with the supercharger,headers,exhuast, etc...
The prices between the two will not be much, but with the supercharger my gas bill is going to go through the roof.


So what do you guys think is the better option. Just ordered ARB steel bumper and i have a friend custom making me a rear tire carrier.

For more power.....what supercharger....There are none out yet.I would just wait for URD and Gadget to come out with the supercharger for this engine . They are working on it. If you got money to burn see if you can kick in some to speed up R&D. I know he was looking for a spare dual vvt-i engine for testing.

You have a large amount to swap engines but you want better fuel economy??Doesn't make sense? People with "large amounts" of money don't usually care about gaining a couple of miles a gallon and their gas bill.
Engine swap to a Turbo Deisel would be at least 10 grand and probably alot more as the cost of all the parts and labor of putting the diesel in would be thru the roof and would take decades to make up the money in gas savings. It's not a plug and play. We're talking new wiring harnesses,ECU's and all kinds of stuff would have to be changed over.

Got money......To get a start ,put on some D. Thorley headers(they just came out with Stainless long tube ones for the 5ths) and have a local shop fab up a custom catback exhaust for you.If you want more low end power have East Coast Gear set you up with some 4.56 gears in the front and rear. http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/
Then when the supercharger comes out you'll be all set up!

I used to have a Nissan Titan and was active on that forum. One of the members converted a Titan to diesel with a Dodge Cummins.

I would LOVE to see a proof of concept diesel for the 4runner. A great 4 or 6 cylinder turbo diesel with a bullet proof transmission would be an incredible recipe for the T4R.
 
Amen, I was hoping Toyota would throw a turbo diesel into a Tacoma too. One day perhaps? Maybe our friend Cgill00 has learned of biodiesel and wants to tap into the virtually endless natural biodiesel supply out there. I hear in addition to impressive gas mileage numbers, your exhaust smells like cooking bacon! Seriously though, if you are concerned with gas mileage, you shouldn't have purchased a truck. I have read that if you can find one, VW's diesel sedans sport super gas mileage. I'd consider one as a commuter ride. You could probably get one used for $10k.
 
A V8 diesel would be awesome. If you have money to blow don't go with a supercharger. That will eventually become affordable to more people.

Do a engine swap with a powerful engine if you want to be unique.
 
Having done 4 engine swaps over time, I am certain you will run into more problems than you ever imagined. I think the idea is silly even if you have 58 quart cooler full of $100 dollar bills.
 
A I4 or 6 diesel would be awesome. A V8 Diesel makes no sense in such a vehicle.

If you are serious about the diesel (I with they offered the 4R in a diesel too), you do NOT need a V8. You are not going to be setting speed records and if you REALLY need that much torque, go out and buy a Sierra HD or something similar.

An Common Rail TDI 4 cylinder may not be quite up to the task (will handle it mechanically, but will fail in perception), a V6 TDI would be nice. Mileage wise you will not gain a lot thought; just check the mileage numbers for a BMW X5 or a MB 350 Bluetec.

Of course with fuel prices where they are at, I would want the Diesel just to A) not be reliant on the Middle East, and B) have a lower price per gallon (now and in the future).

From a cost perspective, neither converting the gas engine to diesel is a cost efficient option (higher compression, fuel burn pre-chambers etc) or doing an engine swap (as already pointed out).

So the basic answer is, buy a Prado/Land Cruiser abroad (Europe likely your best choice) and use that stack of cash to pay the import duties and voila.

The cost of importing and installing diesel engine will never be made up the increased fuel economy. I don't know about Canada regulations, but here in MA I would never be able to get the resulting vehicle inspected.

I have been putting different motors in different cars my whole life. Everyone always said its not possible. The wiring sucks, and you have to work all sorts of bugs out of the car when done. But when its completed, its exactly what you want and no one can tell you any different. I have thrown fully factory injected motors into multiple trucks. Anyone that says its not possible, has no idea what they are talking about. Anyone with a checkbook can add headers and a supercharger!!!!!!!!!!!

Real trucks are built, not bought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO FOR IT!!!!!

Is it possible? Sure, with enough time and money.

Does it make economic sense? Not a chance.

yeah its got more power but is just slightly quicker. definitely rides better though.

i would move up to LC or LX or even the Tundra, all with the 5.7 V8.

Big is right- you put something that large in the engine bay of the 4runner, and you can throw any semblance of weight distribution and handling RIGHT out the window. Diesel engines are heavy due to the thick-walled construction. Our runners are already front-heavy, offroading would suffer by loading even more up in the front...
