Considering purchase of 2001 SR5

Planning to go look at a 2001 SR5 2WD with approximately 158k miles on it tomorrow morning. One owner, no issues on a Carfax report (I know they are of dubious value anyway). A search on the Toyota Owner's site revealed a handful of service records from the same Toyota dealer the past few years, mainly oil changes, and a tune up and replacement of mass air flow sensor in 2014. Asking $6900 at a dealer in metro Atlanta.

I've read the buyer's guide - extremely helpful! Other than looking for rust and no obvious problems with the ball joint, anything else you guys think to look at?

Yeah, one thing I'm learning that is more common for these 4Runners is steering vibration at high speeds (55-70 MPH). I didn't take mine out on a freeway and I've got vibration. Seems like there's fixes for it but it's something to try before you buy.

I would ask about when the timing belt was last replaced and take note of a new or refurbished transmission and radiator

Agreed, I would even say less than that here in UT. Saw one that had 100k miles on the side of the road for 4k and sat there for months. Not sure what the market is in GA though.

I bought my 99 limited 4x4 with 143k miles for $5k just outside of Atlanta 5 months ago. 2 owner, maintenance records since new, timing belt had been done, with new tires. 6900 seems very steep for a 2wd sr5

Steep price. I live in Columbus and got a 4wd 2001 SR5 with 112k for 4,000. Poor physical appearance (2 rusted gashes, faded paint, and broke windshield, as well as dented bumper) PO must've been a monkey. Anyway I say haggle it down to get your value.

Thanks all. I agree, the price is out of line. KBB (from a dealer) is $5200 in this area. I'm sure it would be even cheaper in other areas where 2WD is simply not in demand. I would love to find a 4WD with similar or less mileage and a decent service history but it is just not happening. All the ones I've run across have some major question marks. This one appears to be well taken care of at least.

If you have the patience and time, wait until you find the right one. You'll thank yourself later. May take months but the right one will come. Just be ready to call, check it out, and have finances ready to make an offer. Put down 500 bucks to hold it and take it to a shop and have it thoroughly looked through which cost me less than 100 bucks to do.

I guess 2wd gets you to from point A to point B in style. To each their own though, my purpose was for camping and going off the beaten path which 4wd serves this well and 2wd would be worthless to me. If you don't have harsh winter seasons and don't plan on taking it off road much then I can see why a 2wd would be beneficial. Can't beat the looks of the 3rd gen.

Thanks for the thoughts folks. Although this looks like a nice vehicle, I am passing on it to try and hold out for a 4WD. Going to see a 2004 SR5 Sport V6 4WD tomorrow morning w/ 151k miles. Has a check engine light on that would need to be addressed. Dealer is asking $10900 but already said they will go to $9k or lower as they will probably send it to auction very soon. Any thoughts here? I also posted this to the 4th gen forum.
