I know. I can't believe they rated some of those tires that high. plus more than half of those wouldn't even have the 4 runner tire size.

They put Michelin at the bottom. I have had Michelin on many of my trucks and always loved them. Would not buy any other street tire!

I would like to know all of the criteria they used to judge these ties and how this was used to rate them. Tire technology is a very complex science. The manufacture of tires and the quality of the factory is also important. They have Firestone rated ahead of Michelin, what's with that??? I'm with you Michelin is one of the top quality brands on the road, they are on the top of my list. I use tireracks feed back information from owners that buy and use tires, along with industry feedback. I would also use this information but I would have to see what they used to make their ranking. This is how consumer reports tested the tires

*Overall rating-braking,handling and hydroplaning

Tests:
*Dry braking-from 60 mph to 0 with abs.

*wet braking-40 mph to 0 with and with out abs

*handling-avoidance maneuvers swerve left to right then back, dry and wet cornering grip

*hydroplaning-speed reached before skimming over water

*rolling resistance

*snow traction-how long it took to go from 5 to 20 mph

*Ice braking-10mph to 0 on a ice rink floor without abs

*Ride and noise

I'm sure results would vary based on the vehicle, also two important factors they did not measure, durablity and quality are important to me. Example Firestone blowouts and the death they cause. I will stick with the name brands like Michelin or the Brigstone REVO that got good ratings on tirerack from owners and members of this forum.

I can't believe they rated some of those tires that high.

I rarely use the Consumer reports overall rating since their ranking of the importance of features rarely matches my priorities. What I do pay attention to is their evaluation of individual features.

My 2004 Limited came with the Cross Terrains and I wouldn't have any other tire on this truck. They are quiet, they ride very comfortably, and wet traction seems to be very good.

I'm with the majority, I don't know that I'd necessarily follow CR's recommendations. I think a much better gauge on a tire's characteristics is found in the consumer reviews at Tire Rack.

I know what your saying. I would not go by what they say all the time. Most of the time, the more expensive/better product will be rated less just because of price. I just go by the test results, reliability and consumer reviews when choosing a products

I like my Cross Terrains so far and if they do a good job this winter in the snow and then wear well over the next 50-60K miles I will replace them with another set.

I don't care for CR.

I did read the tire article and CR is very vague on how it tests their tires. I find their results very hard to believe but then CR is rather bizarre. Their criteria for certain things just amazes me and their Trooper stunt a few years ago has tainted their credibility with me.

Didn't CR rigged results for the Isuzu Trooper to tip over more readily than other SUVs several years ago?

Isn't CR famous for idiotic comments about certain vehicles like criticizing small sports cars for not having room for hefty bottom drivers? (It's a Porsche, not a Peterbuilt!)

Isn't CR also known for such sage comments as criticizing Suburban for having bad gas mileage? (Well it also can tow 12,000 pounds too. Can a Prius do that?)

If I want advice on tires, I go to Tire Rack Reviews. If I want to learn about stereos, I go to Audio Review or some stero magazine. Maybe CR should just stick to toasters and blenders and leave the rest for the real experts.:awais:

I used to listen to CR. Until they started reviewing products I was very familiar with. No more. They may occasionally get it right by pure luck, but I'll never know because I won't read that rag ever again. Listen to the experts. And the experts do not reside at CR.
