Contemplating Trading 5th Gen for 4th Gen V8

I went from a fully modded lifted FJ w 285 tires with catless y pipe/intake/exhaust to a lifted GX470 w 285 tires with just a Magnaflow muffler and I don't regret it one bit, the power change is awesome.

Interesting. I had some time today and went to a local Lexus dealership that had a '12 FJ with 23k miles on their lot. White. Not a mark on it. Listed at $29600 (I'd get that down for sure). Basically went for fun and to "scratch and itch" since I never drove one before. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! Now I can't get it out of my head and I'm looking for an excuse to buy it.

I'll never get rid of my 4Runner but maybe I can talk my wife out of her Pilot and into my 4Runner so I can get the FJ and essentially have both. My devious mind continues to work.

I have both in our household - a 2004 sport v8 4x4 and a 2012 limited 4x4. Overall i like the 2004 a lot more. The 2004 has better power and in my opinion drives much better, and in general I think the 2004 handles better especially on snow and ice. No knock on the 5th gen, but I feel like the 4th gen was just built a little more solidly.

There are a few things about the 5th gen that I like - The interior room in 2012 feels significant compared to the 2004 (especially head room) and it seems to start a little better in cold (my 2004 has always started fine since new in the cold, but the 2012 doesn't seem to hesitate even a little when it's -20).

Overall, I wouldn't trade my 2004 for a 5th gen (or anything comparable on the market right now).

Buy the 4th gen. Ive had both. 5th sux. Not enuf motor. Is anyone from toyota listening? You cant give a product a V8 then take it away. ?
They cheapened the 5th gen up. Really stinks because i love the 4runners. Guess it will have to be an overpriced LC next someday after my 4th gen dies. I traded 5th for 4th.
Toyota makes a great product. It could be awesome with a v8 and all wheel drive in it. This being the millionth time we all hashed it out on here.

Theyre trying to make us save some money on gas :-)

if your buying a house, then i'd get the cheapest 4th gen v8 you could. Otherwise i don't believe it would make much sense to sell your 5th gen to buy 4th that's 7k cheaper, once you include the taxes, registration, difference in gas mileage (i just got 14mpg on a 90% highway road trip), the hassle and not too mention the whole "devil you know is better than the devil you don't". I don't think you'll be financially ahead.

I'd get the oldest lowest mileage 4th gen you could. You'll get what you want and be done paying it much sooner. My 03 has a built date of sept 02. They say not to buy a first year production, that may be true sometimes but not with the 4th gen. My 03 hasn't had a single issue/recall that's not also applicable to later 4th gens. All you need for pre-08's is kliv vsc off, which i installed three winters ago, works flawlessly (was using it yesterday) to prevent engine de-throttle and gives no false indication. When i'm bombing thru snowy fields or whatever when i don't want to lock the cdl. I put the tranny in l, vsc off and let her rip. Gas pedal is 100% responsive and no wait for tranny to downshift so i don't even notice traction control transferring power to keep me going, and if there's the slightest sensation of traction control holding me back, i got 320ft/lbs of torque on tap, so its a nonissue. Trying to understand the hole argument of wanting vsc and traction control off hurts my head.

ive had an 09 SR5 V6 and just now the 2010 trail. They both are great in their own ways. every generation has Pros and Cons. It took me 4 years to finally like the 5th gen and get one and now i finally have one. Drove it on ice and snow yesterday and what great control. I love Yotas :-)

If you need an SUV with a V8 engine Toyota would be happy to sell you a Sequoia. ;):

As long as it's a narrow and short wheelbase around the size of a mid-size SUV, with a solid rear axle (the new Sequoias are IRS), good interior, and a powerful V8...

Oh wait, they did; 4th Gen FTW. :pound:

Well.. I don't NEED anything.. none of NEED a 4runner theyres always a cheaper imo less reliable option.. a sequioa is Waugh more than I need/want I'd get a gx470/460 in a heartbeat over a sequioa. I actually have fun with mine on many trails half of which the 4runner is a squeeze as is.. in that sense a 4th gen is better.

The sticking point for me with the 5ths is still the limited availability of the full-time tcase (which is present in ALL the 4WD 4th Gens and only available in the top of the line Limited trucks)

Winter is long up here and we often have weeks on end where we are getting a few inches of snow and ice each day. The dry days are few and far between from Dec - March. It's great to be able to put my '05 V6 into 4HI and leave it there for the whole day or week if need be instead of constantly having to guess when I need 4WD for slippery conditions that might be lurking around the next corner.

I patiently waited and jumped on a Grey 2008 with the V8. It had more miles then I was hoping for at the time (67,000) but was in pristine condition so I pulled the trigger on it. I paid more then I should have but it was an all Arizona truck, and I had to dump money into it over the following 6 months. The Xreas went out (Now I see as a blessing) and the brakes were warped all the way around, plus the battery died on me. Plus I threw a brand new set of tires at it after I replaced the suspension. So a few thousand dollars right off the bat turned out to be money well spent. I love driving it on the highway, does really well off road and the V8 just finishes it off nicely. I can't imagine not having the V8. Even with the fact that I am due to get the timing belt replaced...:thumb:

I'm pretty sure the 4th gen full-time 4wd only came on the V8's.. all V6's have part-time

Its the exact same transfer case, the v6 just give you the two wheel drive option that the v8 doesn't. You can put the v6 in 4 hi and leave it there its entire life if you wish.

Good point. I was also so very disappointed to see Toyota drop the full-time 4wd system (yes, I know it was available on the Limited, but I'd never even consider the Limited model with those pizza-cutter 20s and the low-hanging bodywork) on the 5th gen. I really hope Toyota goes back to the lockable center diff on all versions of the 6th gen.

No, the V6 had the full-time 4wd too. The only difference being that the V6 models had the ability to be switched into 2wd also. With the V6 engine, you could run it in 4wd forever, just like the V8 models.

I didn't know that.. I always thought it was a part-time 4wd like on the 5th gens.. are part-time 3rd gens the same way as 4th gens?

No, all the 4th gens had a lockable, limited slip Torsen center diff. The V8 was fulltime 4WD. The V6 was a multi-mode system. It could be set in 2WD or fulltime 4WD.
