Converting a 22RET to a 22RE

Well I got a 86 4Runner with the turbo, and I have read about some of the problems with the stock turbo and I wanted to find out if I would be able to take the ECU and exhaust manifold from a RE, then pull off the turbo and swap parts would it run properly?

Do yourself and someone else a favor. Sell it to someone that wants a turbo and then buy yourself a normal 22RE.

You'll be money ahead and you'll make someone else very happy!

Im not saying I dont want the turbo, Im just asking incase I ever had a problem with it and couldnt afford to get it fixed or what ever, would I be able to use the exhaust manifold and ECU from the RE and run it until I get it repaired/replaced?

And also I live in ontario canada

It would probably run, some what, but since the turbo engine has a lower compression ratio than the normally aspirated 22RE, power would be way low.

Well now I have gotten a good chance to start working on the truck and well I the tubo is good, I have a bad head gasket, and maybe ( big maybe ) a warped head one i get it off Ill know for sure. and maybe bad rings on cylinder 3 and 4

I did a dry and wet compression test on it and the numbers i got where

Dry-
1. 90psi
2. 60psi
3. 45psi
4. 45psi

Wet-

1. 90psi
2. 60psi
3. 53psi
4. 54psi

Now once I get the head pulled off I will be able to know whats really going on.

And what I am thinking depending on how much I am looking at I know where i can get a good condition 22re for a good price, and was thinking about eventualy converting it to the turbo since I will have all the parts here.

Would it be worth it to swap motors then put the turbo onto it or just look at repairing the motor I have now?

dude id stinking love to have the 22rte. i would fix before doing going to radical like an engine swap.

there was one for sale in colorado springs not too long ago for 4000. It looked pretty nice. I don't know if it came from this country because it had a manual and the turbo and from the reading I've done, they weren't available in this country. Anyway it looked really nice, new tires I believe, and wheels, lowish miles Good luck

thats a good price, especially if it had the 5-speed, most likely from Canada. Glacier Toyota (my local yota dealer) had an 87 22rte, 5-speed pick-up and they wanted 12,000$ sticker price!

definitely easier to just put a 22RE in and sell the RTE, but now that you have it apart... you'll need a 22RE head, 22RE pistons, 22RE exhaust manifold or header, and plug the oil passages for the turbo. You'll also need from the 22RE:, the computer, AFM, injectors, fuel pump will be larger than you need but should work, and that should do it I think,.
