Converting a 4YE from auto to manual

Hi folks, new to the forum and this is my first post.

I have just bought a 2nd Gen 4Runner with 4ye engine and a340H auto trans. The auto makes it pretty sluggish and has no 4th gear or 4 low range so I'm thinking of converting it to a 5 speed.

Could I please have some advice on which 5 speed to fit - G52 or r150f? Also will I need to change driveshafts to the diffs?
Will I need to change the ECU or somehow trick it into thinking it still has an auto?
I'm a former Ford mechanic, but very new to Toyotas!

I'm guessing you meant the 3vze unless there is some other Toyota motor that came in the 2nd gens. If so you would be looking for the r150 series tranny. I did this swap within two weeks with a parts truck. You would have to get either spacers or a different drive line for this swap. It is possible to make the auto ecu work with a manual trans. This is a common swap due to the sluggish nature of the a340 trans. Look it up on here or yotatech there is plenty of info about it.

Dave, most everybody on this board is in the States, and we didn't get the 4YE so not many are going to know which of those transmissions came behind that motor. You'll almost certainly want the driveshafts from your donor truck though, automatic transmissions are normally longer than five speeds.

With the A340F and H automatic transmissions we got, it's easy to trick the ECU into thinking the missing auto trans is in park.

The 4Y was an export model 4 cylinder engine for the 4 runner, mostly in Australia from what I can tell.

Hey thanks guys, I didnt realise that you don't get the smaller motors over there!
I think there's an Aussie sub-section to this forum so I'll go look over there.

It seems like the 4 cylinder and the V6 both use the a340H! I'd assume with a different bell housing and torque convertor though.
