Coolers... Whats your favorite?

Completely Random, but I have a question regarding coolers.

My main concern is which type will keep my favorite frosty beverage :beer: cold the longest.... Plastic or Steel Belted?

I have always used a plastic rolling cooler (similar to the one in the link below) but I recently heard a steel belted cooler was the way to go.

Whats the big difference and is it really worth the extra $75. Thanks for the advice! :hatsoff:

i donno, but my guess would be steel holds the cold longer, but then metal is a conductor, so wouldnt it conduct the outside hot temps, and thus turning the whole thing warmer? i donno, unless its some kind of thick insulator between 2 thick sheets of steel. which would make sense..so ya random question, but steel holds more cold and repels the heat lol

it doesn't quite work that way. yes, metal is a better conductor of heat (cold is simply a lack of heat), but the only reason that cabela cooler is lined with steel is for strength. the styrofoam insulation is what is responsible for its ability to keep the heat out. if you wanted to build a cooler strictly out of steel, that worked as well as a styrofoam insulated cooler, it would have to be so thick that it would be so heavy you wouldn't even be able to pick it up.

I got a max cold cooler, that they used to sell in costco, mind you i'm in Hawaii, the last tsunami warning that we had a few weeks ago, I bought 8 bags of ice, 6 of them went into the maxcold cooler, the other 2 went into this rinky dink old cooler I had. Within the day the 2 ice bags were melted. 4 days later, in the maxcold cooler, I still had ice in the 6 bags, and this is with it being left in the back porch area.....this is just from my personal experience. I only bought the maxcold because it was on sale. Best cooler i've ever owned.

Coleman Collector

"Cool" thread!

I am a Coleman collector as in Coleman camping gear. Anything made by Coleman over the years I have, coolers, lanterns (over 150+), stoves, tents, water jugs, heaters, they made it, I have it!

My doctor said that he has some medicine for my Coleman addiction but I'll pass. lol

I like and use the old steel-belted coolers. I have one that matches my 4Runner and one that matches my Toyota truck. The one I used in my 4runner is a 13 gallon steel-belted made in 1977. The one I used in my pickup is a Colossal Coleman cooler. It is the biggest steel-belted Coleman made, a 22 gallon monster! It is dated 1981.

The awesome thing about the steel-belted coolers is that you can paint them to match you vehicle.

Below picture is the Colossal out in the Void. I probably have more miles on this cooler than most people have on the 4Runners!

This Colossal cooler will hold anything you want when out in the Oregon Void. I keep a canvas tarp on top of the cooler and keep it out of direct sun light which will make the ice last 5 days in 100 degree heat...I tested this myself.

The Colossal came with a water jug that you can freeze, a sandwich tray and a ice bucket that will hold 25 pounds of ice. I use the ice bucket as a food bucket to keep the food dry.
This picture below we had 24 beers, 24 sodas, 2 Rib-eye steaks, two pounds of bacon, dozen eggs, two pounds of chicken breast, three pounds of Carne Asada, bottle ketchup, bottle mayonnaise, etc, and 30 pounds of crushed ice.

I think I have about 12 Coleman coolers in my garage right now but I am not for sure. I sell them on Ebay during the summer and to other Coleman collectors. Garage sales are a good place to find them.

This mint condition 1963 Red Diamond logo is very collectible.

This is a 1969 Blue 13 gallon steel-belted in mint condition. Very rare in this condition and very collectible.

I got a green one that looks similar to your red one. It's probably a bit smaller and doesn't have the drain valve.

So it sounds to me like the only advantage of the Steel-Belted cooler is the durability and "cool"ness factor :reddance: haha

cool, im in cherokee county. im familiar with that area. my parents use to work at the ford building in dunwoody..if u know the one im talking about (u can see it driving on 285)

After buying real exspensive ones and ones that are not so exspensive, I have come to the conclusion that after a few years they lose their ability to keep things cool. So after 4 or 5 seasons no matter how big or small, steel or plastic I get another one.

I use a SSI 320qt cooler for my boat and parties, 11 years old and still looks new. Once loaned it to friends for a beach party, they completely filled it with beer and ice then decided they wanted to move it closer to the water, I quietly told everyone to watch as 4 guys tried to move it, needless to say it stayed there for the entire party.:lmao:
