Cooling problems, water pump

I've been chasing an overheating problem in my 91 Runner now for two years. Replaced the water pump, radiator, thermostat, two years ago. Last month or so it's started overheating again, to the point that last Friday on the way home it took 3 1/2 hrs to get home.

Pulled the water pump Sunday and the thickness on the impeller vanes had been reduced down to about the thickness of a beer can. The turned up part of the vane was non existent and one complete impeller vane was missing which I later fished out of the engine block with a magnet.

This water pump was an aftermarket part purchased from Advanced Auto parts.

A workmate sent me this link showing water pump problems. I know I didn't mix incompatible coolants, and I did change the coolant when the pump was installed so that leaves only one guess.

Needless to say I replaced the water pump with a Toyota unit.

Word to the wise: if you're tearing an engine down this far, use genuine Toyota stuff. I learned my lesson.
