Cooling system or Heater core?

I have an 88 V6 5-spd and I have noticed the sound of what I think is antifreeze/water rushing through either the heater core or through a line on the other side of the firewall. I only hear it when I have the heater or defrost on, with heat. When I have the climate on Vent, no sound. Is this normal?

I have been checking the overflow tank on the radiator and it is using/loosing fluid. It always seems to be topped off IN the radiator, but I have filled the overflow tank (to proper level) twice this week.

This is a high mileage vehicle (287k body/ 70+k on rebuilt V6) and I'd like to keep it running. The engine doesn't seem to over heat, at least on the temp gauge.

This is my first Toyota, so I have no experience to know if this is normal. Any comments?
