Cooper AT/3 vs Nitto Terra Grappler GS2

Hi folks

Gonna buy bigger tires to put on my 2011 4Runner. Gonna mount these on FN Six Shooters which are 17 x 8 w/ 0 offset & 4.5 backspace.

I want a little taller and a little wider. Use includes highway, aired down on soft sand, snow & Ice, light off-road trails.

I'm comparing the Cooper AT/3 vs Nitto Terra Grappler GS2 in the 285/70/17 standard load (C load or P-metric). I was pretty much sold on the Nittos because I’d heard that they are really good aired down in sand. 85Red suggested the Coopers which are a little cheaper. Can anyone else here offer any opinions or better yet, comparasons? Their specs look pretty similar.

I've never run the Nittos, but I've run Cooper AT3s and a few other reputable tires and while they aren't as aggressive looking as other tires, they are the best all around tire I've ever run. And I've run them all over the world, including some middle eastern countries with soft sand.

There is a lot of info about these two tires on here if you search for it. Having said that, expedition portal has done a comparison on many of the common tires on here (however terra grapplers weren't in the comparison). Anyway, long story short, they chose the AT/3 as the best all around tire.

After I wear out my KO2's i think ill give the coopers a chance. I didn't get them the first time around because honestly they didn't look aggressive enough to me.

If it's important to you for purposes of comparison, Cooper ATs tend to run a little smaller in overall diameter than comparable tires.

See what SIRWILLYSC thinks of Nittos in 'Epic Trip" thread above. 5 punctures and excessive wear in 12k miles. However, think this makes case to never run 'P' metric tires off-road.

I've run them both on the 4Runner platform in Stock size. I currently am running the Nitto's and basically the Coopers have a slight edge in every metric but not by much.

Here's the deal: if looks are most important then get the KO2 or Duratrac. If on road performance is most important then get Michelin.
If best all purpose is most important then get Cooper AT3.
I will go back to either the Michelin or Cooper when I buy tires next.

You guys def sold me on the Coopers! A little smaller is good, seeing I'm going to 285s and really don't wanna do a body mount chop. Heck they're even a little cheaper. Not all that concerned w/ looks. Yes the KO2s are bassass & by all accounts great tires. I really don't need that aggressive or heavy of a tire. The only looks I really care about is the stock size looks terribly undersized w/ my lift. Plus, my silver 2011 SR5 is pretty plain Jane as compared to the newer design and especially the TR5. All around performance is what I'm looking for and based upon everyone's responces here that's the Coopers.
