Nitto Ridge Grappler Tire Damage

I’m running 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires on my 4R. I just returned from a week long trip on the New Mexico Discovery Route. Most of the trails are either maintained gravel or hard packed dirt roads.

After this trip I noticed some of the lugs on the tires have broken off or are showing damage. I aired down to 20 psi while on the trails and aired back up while driving on any pavement. I only have 26,000 miles on my 4R and the tires are about 3 years old. Just seeing if anyone else has run into similar damage with these tires?

your general wear looks very similar to mine at about the same mileage as yours. are yours P, C, or E load?

The tires are C load. I have used BF Goodrich AT, Good Year Duratrac and KO2 on my Jeep over the years and those have never shown that type of wear and the Jeep is my rock crawler and I air down from 12-18 psi regularly. This is the first time using Nittos so not sure if it’s normal or not.

I have just over 50,000 miles on my Nitto’s with similar driving conditions as you state. They have been phenomenal! I just had them rotated a couple weeks ago and the folks at Discount Tire couldn’t believe how well they’ve warn. They measured at 11/32. I’m running 285/70 R17 c rated. They’ve been the best tire I’ve ever had for a semi aggressive style tire.

Yup that has been my experience with them as well on top of a couple of sliced sidewalls. Great tires for the street but not up to snuff for real off-road use imho.

I'd say that's consistent with my experience also. I only got 28,000 out of a set of 285/75 C tires and I had a ton of issues with my 305/70 E and gave up on them at 12,000 miles. Both sets chunked and had a lot of issues balancing. They were horrible in ice and snow.
It's a good looking tire but that's about the end of it. As [MENTION=134661]Xtremluck[/MENTION] said there are better tires for actual off road use.

This is a pretty good read, although I wish they had some Yokohama tires on there... (I've had great luck with them on old jeeps..)

yea they chunk out bad off-road. same issues on my E rated ones on the f250

I have same experiences with the 305 E rated and can not imagine having C rated. they get torn up easily off road and I only have about 10,000 miles on them. I will not keep them much longer for trail use and only use them on the road. Good news or bad news I'm not sure (i'm happy), my 4R spends far more time off road then on.

Looks accurate. The RG has soft rubber and tears relatively easily on rocky terrain. I got rid of my c-load RG a while back. Poor handling in snow and on anything wet. Decent on dry trails.

These tires should definitely come with an air down warning. I have seen and heard of this quite a bit, especially from the people that air down for trails. Look for another tire next go around and you will be much more pleased.

Crazy to hear all these responses...I guess I found the perfect compound with regards to my Nittos. The light snow use I did have was not great but I don’t drive in the snow much at all. I’ll think real hard on my next tire purchase after reading these experiences. Perhaps I got lucky.

Tires are a crapshoot. Some people with KO2s brag about getting 50k+ miles while I am going to have to replace mine at 40k. I may try the Atturo Trail Blade X/T. At least they aren't expensive.

those look interesting, very similar tread pattern to the goodyears that we've seen being tested on the bronco and TRX

Most forum "reviews" I see of tires seem to be a bunch of Fanboy nonsense justifying their tire choice. Most AT tires at 50,000 miles aren't worth much and certainly aren't providing much reliable traction. Only thing worse is a testimony from someone with 500 miles on their tires. Honest, unbiased, unpaid reviews of tires are hard to come by.
