How long is your oil dipstick? Mine is 17-3/4 inches (45 cm) from tip to the "stop" that stops it going into the tube.

(just bought a 2001) Thanks

Bump. This is on the 5VZ engine, 3.4 L V6

Is this the right dipstick?

I just bought my first T4R. It reads a quart low 500 miles since last owner had it changed at Firestone (cringe). Just making sure before I add oil. Thanks

From what I've read on here in other threads before, you won't find a definitive answer on whether or not you have the right dipstick. If I recall correctly, there are like 3 different dipstick all under the same Toyota part number and it seems to be a gamble on which one of those you'd receive if you ordered one.

The dipstick seems to be one of the great unexplained mysteries of third gens.

Oh wait, scratch what I said. I thought you were referring to the transmission dipstick.

If you mean the engine oil dipstick, I don't think there's any variance. What would make you suspect that you may have the wrong one?

I wondered the same thing when this was originally posted.

My advice: Do your own oil change since the truck is new to you. Fill it up with 5.75qts (assuming you have the V6) and see where that reads on the dipstick. If it's full, then cool, you have the right dipstick.

You've piqued my curiosity so I measured both the 96's and the 99's (3.4) dipsticks and both are 17 3/4".

If you're curious enough the dipstick extends 3" or 76mm below the tube, into the oil pan. The low marking is about 13mm from the tip of the dipstick and the high marking is 33mm from the tip.

Thanks for taking a peek. :-) I hope you didn't take the pan off just for this. That would be the peak of geek.

Hmm, does 5.75 quarts include running the engine/pump through a new filter? Thanks!

Habanero had some good info too! (17.75" tip to stop)

I've pulled the washer tank to answer a question that made me curious so what's a little oil pan drop on a 4 wheel drive truck? :D

Really I'd replaced the dipstick tube o-ring some time ago and documented this info is in my build thread- an easy copy/paste.
