Correcting the RPM guage

I've got an 84 with a swapped in V6 3VZE. The RPM reads pretty high even though I am not pressing the gas much. Previous owner said there was still something there thinking it was the 4cyl and an adjustment for that exists.

All my searches about RPM, adjustment, engine swap and RPM adjustment, correcting etc... lists information about correcting the engine idle, by identifying the correct ilde RPM, letting it run to reach the correct operating temperature, and them turning an adjusting screw.

I don't think that is going to do it since the RPM is being read wrong to start off with, any adjustement to the idle will not fix this.

There must be some other sensor or adjustment somewhere else that hooks up to the tach?

Any ideas? Or what the proper terminology for my seaching should be.
