cost to replace timing belt + water pump ?

Hello all , what is the approximate labor cost to have a shop do this work her in northern california and what is a fair price for all oem parts, timing belt thermostat, water pump etc. ? I have read the tutorials on doing the job and I could probably do it my self but I don't have a belt tensioner

From the research I have done, the best value for the parts is on eBay, look up seller aircabinman and he has several kits available. He will even make a custom kit for you if you don't need certain parts (for instance I didn't need the regular alternator belt or thermostat since I am supercharged). Can't help you on labor costs but the job really isn't all that bad. I don't have a belt tensioner either, you can just go by feel.

As mentioned above. Get the aircabinman kit from ebay, you will have all of the OEM parts you need at the best price around. Under $300.00

I'm not sure how much a shop will charge you in labor to install this in North Cal, but when I shopped around here in Canada it was around $500-$600 (CAD), but they also warned me that if the crank and cam seals needed replacement, then there would be a little bit more labor involved. So, maybe around $400 USD for labor?

Nothing ever came of it as I still have the kit in my Garage at the moment. I'm not gonna bother having it replaced until either the timing belt or water pump give out (or I just happen to have some extra cash to throw on the install.)

Haven't checked recently but you can also take the parts list and piece it out on Amayama. Might be even cheaper than aircabinman's kit and you get the benefit of being able to customize the parts.

The belt tensioner is bolted to the block. It is a part that is generally replaced when you do the timing belt job. It's not a tool.

Does that make sense?

Also, the front crank seal is easy to replace once you have everything apart. It adds maybe 5 minutes to the job.

The kits come with a compressed tensioner so you don't need the tool.

Especially if you rent them. The two biggest specialty tools you need are the spanner to hold the crank pulley while you tigthen/loosen the bolt, and a torque wrench that reads up to 250 lbs. I rented a torque wrench from my local Oreily Auto parts, since mine doesn't go that high.


Everything else can be done with a basic hand tool set.

The kits come with a compressed tensioner so you don't need the tool.

This, otherwise take it off and stick it in a vice,or maybe compress it with a clamp on the engine, never tried that. It has a hole where you pin it down with an Alan wrench or nail or something untill installed.

To answer the OP's question, I paid $680 parts and labor to a local mechanic last year

I will do the next one myself using the aircabinman kit when my T4R turns 300K

Hey guys I just bought the same kit that 111db got. Aisin TKT-025 Engine Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump. I also ordered a new thermostat,crank bolt and belt set. It does not come with the crank or cam seals. The 2000 4Runner has 150k on it. Do the seals usually leak? I believe this is the original TB.

Good post, this is a must-do at the same time in my opinion.

It does not come with the crank or cam seals. The 2000 4Runner has 150k on it. Do the seals usually leak? I believe this is the original TB.

I'm not aware that they're prone to leaking, but anything is possible. When I did my TB the first time around 120k, they were not leaking and I did not change them. Now at almost 240k I'll take a look but at this point I'm not planning on changing them.
