I had to laugh this weekend. Like many others on this board, it turned out that Costco had the lowest prices I could find on 265/70R17 Bridgestone Revo's. However, they also said their tire shop could install them.
I pointed out that the Revo's were slightly taller than the stock Dunflops 265/65R17's on the vehicle. They said no problem, so I told them to go ahead, including the spare. I was suprised, because others on this board have said that Costco won't install tires if they're a different size, but these folks seemed OK with it.
They then spent the next 45 minutes removing the 5 wheels from the truck, swapping the tires over, balancing the new Revos, before putting the first wheel back on the truck. Then followed a little parade, where they all crowded around the wheel, peering at it and behind it. Then they lowered the hoist a little to put the wheel on the ground and looked again. Finally they came up to me and said, "it rubs!".
I replied, "no way, it can't rub". They insisted it did. I told them I knew several people with that exact tire on that exact vehicle. They assured me at great length it rubbed. They told me it was rubbing on the suspension components & on the frame. The frame?? Now I really knew they were smoking something. I told them, "show me". They said "no", telling me I wasn't allowed in the workshop area. Very convenient excuse. I suggested they allow me to leave anyway; it's my problem. They refused, saying I wouldn't even get around the first corner, when the suspension would rip into the tire, making a huge hole, bringing the truck down, and ending modern civilization as we know it.
They then decided that the Dunflops had to go back on. After all that work to install & balance the Revos, they were going to undo it all by re-installing and re-balancing the Dunflops. Incredible. I persuaded them to leave one Revo on the spare tire, but they were adament on swapping back the other 4. Off they go for another 45 minutes. Meanwhile this has thrown them miles behind schedule and other folks are arriving for their own tire appointments. The Costco guys tell them they're an hour behind and kindly point to me, saying "that guy bought the wrong sized tires and we have to do it all over again". Generous of them to publicly blame their ineptitude on me.
Later on, one of the guys realises they've been a bit harsh and comes over to apologise to me.
Time passes & eventually I leave with the Revos piled into the back of the truck. Not on the wheels like I'd been hoping, but close. The next day I take them to a normal tire shop who have no problems installing them, as you'd expect. There's no rubbing; not even close. I had to laugh. Costco might be able to sell stuff cheap, but I guess they purchased those guys in their tire shop for some heavily-discounted price....
