Could use some help diagnosing a strange noise

I don't know if this has been mentioned already but, you could try to disconnect the sway bar and see if it stops? And like wise with any other component you suspect making noise (within reason of course).

Phantom noises like this are the worst to track down and best way IMO is to isolate and test, and rinse and repeat until you find it.

Did you ever take it to the dealer? If so, what was the diagnostic? Charge?

I did take it to the dealership, and of course when they drove it, they didn't hear it. My dealer is good to work with. Never a charge for a diagnosis like this. The noise has gone...mostly...it's much quieter now. I removed my front away and lubed up joints an bushings for it. Hopefully this solves it once things work the lube in!

after reading more of your description..
I was thinking either a dry bushing, or dry socket.
sometimes they are very hard to find. but the TRE's and ball joints will make that kind of noise when they get dry.

if they have zerks, then obviously grease them. but most OE suspension stuff isn't greasable.

I like to use the needle adapter for the grease gun, and slide it under the boot. try not to puncture it, if its still intact and good. but sometimes getting that grease in there will make it stop squeaking, as well as extending its life.

The noise might be coming from the hood and not from the suspension (yes, I’m not kidding). I had a noise similar to what you describe on my vehicle that used to happen while turning and while going over bad roads (when the suspension has to work, like you mentioned). From behind the wheel the sound seemed to come from the suspension.

I went to the dealer and the guy told me that they in some way adjusted the hood lock assy (they also put grease over it). ..This solved the problem for me.

You said that after your visit to the dealer the noise is mostly gone, well if the problem is on the hood you might hear a quieter noise after opening and closing the hood and after washing the vehicle (in case you did).

I think is worth to check this out. Hope this can help you and others.

sounds mostly like a dry sway bar bushing to me.. try lubing it.. or replacing the bushing with a new one

I have what sounds like a similar issue on my 4th gen after installing 6112's, and 32" KO2's.

Has anyone with a 2016 Trail with KDSS had this issue? Last night, I was going over a large speed hump/table entering a traffic circle in a shopping center near my home, and something stated clicking/knocking/popping, but it's just one single noise, not a crackle, or creaking it's a single click/pop/knock. My car has a whopping 7000 miles on it, a 2"/1" cornfed leveling kit from Burtman Industries. Nothing is loose, not my wheel spacers, the noise happens but only seems to happen after the car has warmed up a bit. It also seems to happen when I turn quickly to the left, but it seems to happen more often when going over bumps...so I'm guessing it might be suspension? Anyone have any ideas?

I might as well bump this old thread because the thread is describing my noise exactly.

It only happens with a left turn at about 20-30 mph - medium turn. It never makes a noise going straight or right. Mine is a 2016 with KDSS and 25k miles. All bushings look brand new obviously. Rechecked torque on the LCA bolts. Removed skid plate. Noise is still there.

It does sound crazy but I am going to try the hood next because I read that in a few places. I would expect it to also happen on straight roads or turning right if the hood was loose, but maybe the way the latch is designed it only has movement when turning left and the hood design amplifies the noise.

My noise is like a creaking / squeak and maybe one pop initially. It might make 1-3 noises during the turn. The example of wooden creaking on a ship is spot on. It does not sound like a conventional ball joint clunk.

Any other ideas?

Edit: I don't get it, but I think it was the hood. I greased the latch and cleaned the bump stops and the long wind strip as well which was really dirty. The noise seems to be gone. I will give it a few days still because I don't believe it. My noise was a pretty substantial creak / suspension sounding noise but to anyone out there with an unknown noise with low mileage it's worth a shot checking the hood.

I'd like to bump this thread as well. Experiencing the same issue as blefevre, but the noise is barely audible. Weird thing is I can feel it through the turns on my gas pedal and as it straightens back out. I have a 16 Trail with KDSS and 8k miles.
