Couldn't get it to 24mpg :(

Just took a long trip in my wife's 04 T4R V6. Replaced the spark plugs 2 weeks before the trip, replaced the air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor and checked the tire pressure. I reset the information display in the center stack to see if I could hit 24 mpg since driving around town usually gives us 22.6.

It didn't even get to 23mpg! This was freeway driving at 70 mph for 570 miles and cruise control set most of the time. Finally average was 22.8mpg.

I'm not upset about it, the vehicle still drove great the whole trip and really purred with the new spark plugs. But it feels like failure since I set a goal and didn't make it...LOL.

Never go by the MPG guage in the information display. That is never accurate. I go by my GPS and I am getting around 22-23 mpg on the highway. Mine is a 2008 V6 SR5.

Ahem...by chance, did you know that the MPG ratings for your vehicle are based on going 55mph?

If you want better mileage, driving 70mph ain't gonna get you there.

I never said anything about ratings. This was an experiment based on previous driving habits and recent tune up items.
 
The last time I hit 24 MPG with my '07 SE V6, it was on CAlifornia gas on Interstate 5 in Spring or Summer.

Maybe it's just the way I drive, but using cruise control has shown a slight decrease in gas mileage.
 
This last August, I was able to get 23.4 mpg (hand calc.). Quite fankly, I don't know how I did it. Hell,.. my trip calc said I was getting 26mpg! It was during a drive from Seattle to NW Oregon, not on freeways mind you, but through rolling, curving two lane highways. I've always thought that with these numbers I should be able to get around 24.5 mpg if I was on a 100% flat freeway roadtrip, but around here, there isn't much of that. It's interesting to see your numbers posted above though.
 
that winter gas crap is bull..im sorry but my runner went from the range reading 390 and as i would drive it would gain miles so i would get to about 400 miles on a full tank with 17 to 22 mpgs..to now the range reading 290 and as i now drive it loses miles and i now get 270 miles to a full tank with 13 to 15 mpgs....now you winter gas people gonna tell me that winter gas did that?? i dont think so....if anyone has any answers as to a fix for this bull..it would be appreciated.
 
I just finished a 3000 mile trip to FL and back. I averaged 21mpg with my 08 4L v6. Ever since all of the fuel has gone to E10 my mileage has dropped 1-2 mpg. and performance has suffered as well. But I have never hit over 23mpg when cruising in the 65-70 mph range. I have noticed the mileage drops off when you exceed 2000 rpm in 5th gear. So, my guess is you need to roll at 60-65mph.

Rumor has it that the feds will allow gas companies to go to E15.....and there's a possibility that it could render all yard equipment useless.

On a side note, if you want to increase fuel mileage, do what my signature says, and that's to drive behind an 18 wheeler or large vehicle whenever possible. :banana:
 
After a week back from the trip and back to normal driving, the 4Runner is now averaging 23mpg. So it looks like the culprit might be the fact that we had the rear end loaded down with so much stuff for our vacation, that weight played a factor.

Also, this was a trip from TX to FL, so no hills or high winds, just straight two lane I-10 driving.
 
The only time I ever got 24-25mpg was on a spring trip from Denver to Moab when my Runner was on the stock tires which were very worn. I was shocked that I made it from Denver to Moab and still had 1/4 tank left. Since I got new tires and a lift, well, I'm happy to get 21 on the highway.
 
I drive mostly highway, long distance, and I'll lose 2-4 MPG cruising at 70 MPH vs 55 MPH (but who the hell can drive 55 on a 6-8 hour trip?). And as stated, the on-board is good for relative info only.

Hand calculate to get your REAL fuel mileage. At a steady 55, I can get the onboard to read 26 MPG (pump-to-pump) which works out to be 23.5 - 24.0 hand calculated.
