Couple of Questions about 2007 Sport

Friends-

New to me 2007 Sport, 2WD, So Cal car. 124K. I also own a 2012 4WD, previously a 2002 4WD, SR5.

A couple of quick questions about these pictures.

1st - The rear door latch has some sort of mixture of goo/chewing gum/sealant/and tar... Basically a stick mess that someone obviously put there as a patch/fix. Can you take a look at the picture? The latch feels loose and I am wondering how to disassemble once I get all the goo out. I assume the latch or mounting of latch is broken.

2nd - There is an aftermarket alarm. The vehicle has no remotes and while I can't figure the alarm logic out, I have woken neighbors a few times and it has to go, or be programmed properly. Any idea by looking at the picture what alarm it is? At least I can chase down the correct aftermarket installer.

Welcome to 4th gen forums! I cannot answer 100% to questions you've given but can guide you in the right direction

1) I dealt with the same issue however I'm not too sure what you mean by loose in regard to the latch. The rubber is actually factory defective. It's been happening to a bunch of 4R's and Lexuses with certain years so you are not alone. The best way to correct this is to dry scrap all the gunk then replace it with a new one. You will see dried rubber on your paint...at one point you will need to have the area buffedout during your annual detail

2) This is the question I'm unable to answer 100% although if you do not mind my asking, how did you acquire this vehicle?I think through a dealership they must provide a set of keys and remotes at time of sale.

If this transaction was done through a private sale between two individuals, I would consider taking the 4R to a shop that specializes in audio as they tend to be familiar with wiring to troubleshoot or uninstall the system and sell it for a profit (after learning of the brand/model) then visit the dealership to have a new set of keys and remotes programmed for peace of mind (warning: dealership cost is expensive so it's up to you it's worth it)

Re: question 1, there are several threads on that topic, but I posted a few pictures of how I went about fixing that issue on my '07 at http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-g...te-rubber-button-replacement.html#post2467667 A new rubber handle is available for about $17 on eBay, and then it's mostly just carefully scraping and removing the old piece and then putting the new one on, instead of buying the entire assembly from Toyota.

Thanks friends. I had no idea that black goo was factory original! I will scrape and replace.

For the alarm I will chase further but it's logic is screwy, i.e. Unlock door, press unlock button for all locks, go to tailgate, open and close, and here comes alarm.

Until the alarm is sorted out, unplug the alarm horn in the engine bay and be kind to your neighbors :becky:

even factory keyless, first unlock is driver only, second unlock will unlock everything including trunk.

also i would replace the whole switch assembly, instead of the rubber, sure the rubber is cheap, but do you want to spend all that time to clean out the nasty sticky crap and put the new in versus just do a new switch install?
i saved money by doing the rubber only, but i regretted that since it was so messy.still wont be able to clean everything to brand new.

All more the reasons to carefully scrap all the gunk to the best of your ability if you're trying to save $! I too went the same route and thankfully were able to scrap majority of gunk while ensuring none of it was visible from the outside

Both look like hack jobs. I would remove and replace immediately on both. Hopefully the rest of the vehicle wasn't "fixed" like these two issues.

Respectfully, I would not say the 1st issue was a hack job. This issue is literally a factory issue where Toyota shipped defective rubber pads and installed it on select vehicles depending on year - I believe few models by Lexus were also impacted by this.

I actually bought my '07 Sport in NJ and came across the rubber gunk a week later when I accessed my rear gate haha. Just unfortunate I wasn't able to catch this issue during time of sale - it was a Toyota dealership so I'm sure they'd have replaced it right away if I made a note of this prior to completing transaction. It's 3 hours away from me otherwise I'd have returned to the dealership and insist they replace it free of charge. Oh well - it wasn't too expensive of a fix at least which is good. Better than having to replace the whole thing

I guess I wasn't aware of that, but it does look like a/m screws as well up there which is what lead me to believe it was a quick fix.

It was very frustrating purchasing a vehicle in SOCAL. High prices, very few 4WD. Eventually I purchased from a "used car salesman" LMAO... But they had only Toyota's and clean ones. And knew the vehicles very well. I am 3rd owner on this one and the Carfax documentation of service checks, all at stealership is extensive. So I think the important stuff is taken care of.

Only issues: Black Gunk, No Manual (already received $30 on eBay), no remotes and screwy alarm.

My first project will be Pioneer entertainment system with back up camera, bluetooth. My second project will be to pick up a cooler set of rims on Craigslist with brandy new tires on it from someone upgrading a new vehicle. Not sure after that. Its a beach and boating car so lift, etc not that important to me.

Thanks for sharing that EBay item, I just ordered one for my '07 as well. Existing rubber pad is deteriorated but not quite as bad as your pics. This will be a nice fix before it turns into gum.

You're lucky you don't reside in the northern states.

I didn't think my rubber was too bad but it froze solid on me during the stretch of below 0*F weather we had in MN last winter. Changing it out was the first thing I did earlier this spring. It was way more gummy on the back side/handle mechanism than the outside I was touching.
