Couple things after sc install

So, I've done bunch of research... and I'm just looking to see what you guys think... Here's the deal:

I installed a gen 1 super charger in great condition off a forum member about a month ago. I'm running no fuel mods, just the "free fmu". I had already done the ISR and deckplate mods. It runs great from 0-65,70... then seems to need more fuel...acceleration after that can be described as sluggish at best. On the highway I keep getting the p0171 code. Ive done my homework, and I've checked the usual culprits yesterday. Throttle body trd gasket installed correctly (really only one way you can put it in). Checked my vacuum connections... all seem correct. Cleaned the maf. I also changed to the IK22 plugs... when I did, I was a little concerned with what I saw on the old plugs (see pic) keep in mind these plugs only have about 1500 miles on them! Should I be concerned, and are my highway symptoms normal for running no fuel mods?? I started the truck yesterday, and no codes or pending codes popped up, but I don't want to drive it today as their is too much salt on the roads.... Let me know what you guys think... thanks in advance.

Hey, the P0171 code is the same one i get on occasion. It is a lean code from fuel starvation. I did the same as you and checked all my lines and connections and gaskets and smoke tested my rig three times. There is no leak. Mine did it a BUNCH when i first installed the supercharger and as the computer adjusted--as much as it could--it started coming up less and less. Now i get it only once or twice every few months...Along with my STUPID charcoal canister codes. :violin::bash::frusty: You're fine to drive it and not stress as long as you have verified that you have no air/fuel leaks.

Thanks for the peace of mind. Think I have about 550 miles on it... Seemed to happen a bunch on the highway, back roads not so much.... Also getting some slow surging when I let off the gas at highway speed... Almost as if the computer starts adding fuel when it back in tolerance? Maybe it still needs to learn or some thing... Side note... It's a 99 auto Cali emissions.

Try removing the EFI fuse and relay to allow the computer to reset. Then drive it around for a week and see how it does. Mine took about 2 tanks to level out. Also, the surge you are talking about...Is it when you go from hard or medium acceleration to no throttle? If so, then again...thats the lean condition. Im betting what you're noticing is the surge after throttle input where the rpm's dips then bounces back up a bit. If so, thats normal and thats where the "Part throttle boost enrichment" compensates and rids you of that. The 7th injector is built to compensate for many things , that being one of them. This is straight from URD's website.

"The URD 7th Injector Kit Kit for the Toyota 3.4 V6 equipped with the TRD Supercharger:

Increase Torque
Increase Horsepower
Eliminate High RPM Lean Out
Eliminate High Gear / Low RPM Ping
Provides the needed part throttle boost enrichment"

Gotcha. So all normal conditions for non urd sc. I did pull the efi fuse, it's had a couple tanks of gas now too... So, I'll see how it goes from here. Thanks for the input, it's appreciated. I was hoping to get by with out spending too much more money to get it running right. Don't need crazy power, just want it to run right.

So correct me if I'm wrong, I'm in the process of collecting parts to install my 1st gen SC. In the manual I got for instalation it had a page that said the FMU was not needed. It came with the upgraded fuel pump thing but the instructions said to not install it, it was thought to be needed in early applications but toyota and TRD decided it wasn't necessary to install. Just install the SC with no fuel upgrades needed.

OP, did you see those same insert in the manual or have heard of what I am talking about?

I'm curious, I really would like to have no problems with my install and any help would be great.

I'm already sold on the URD 7th kit, but maybe this could be what's wrong with the OP's installation?

Edit....edit....edit....edit....edit....edit

Ah crap!!!!! FMU ( field monitoring Unit) okay so I've had a long day! LOL I'm sure your FMU is not the issue!!

i think you answered your own question. your throwing lean codes cause you are leaning out.
need fuel mods unfortunately..
gotta pay to play; do it right the first time. Its worth it in my opinion

are you talking about the fuel pressure regulator? whats this free fmu your talking about?

The free fmu mod is a mod gadget came up with. You connect the fuel pressure regulator to the boost port on the sc instead of a vacuum line. It's supposed to do something similar to the Trd fmu.

Trd got rid of the fmu (not the Feild monitoring unit... The Trd fuel thing) on the second gen as it wasn't with out flaws, and the later model 3rd gen ecu' are supposed to "learn" better than the earlier years. (In terms of adding fuel when needed)That said I spoke to a toyota mechanic who has had the same sc on three different vehicles and he swears by the Trd fmu. He told me to find one on eBay... So if you have it, install it, and see if you can save some money... Worst case your back to your original plan of buying the 7th.

So as an update to my initial post.... After cleaning the MAF and throttle body, tightening some vac connections, and changing to the ik22's the truck runs so much better... Knock on wood... My acceleration at highways speeds is linear and the surging and hesitation seems to have disappeared! So pumped! So far, no p0171. Again, knock on wood!

Looks like you've got your problem taken care of. But if you still want to take a peak at your AFRs, you can look at your front O2 sensor readings. You've got Cali emissions, so you have a wideband O2 sensor up front, and you can look at the voltage it reports to see what your AFR is. Check out the write up in my signature for more info. If you don't have an iPhone you can do something very similar with Torque on an Android phone.
